87 Octane gas and NO PING?

I recently had an incident where I ran out of gas and had to go get a can and fuel, and consequently their pumps were down, all but regular. I chanced it knowing that my Hondata was tuned for 92 octane, and only got a few gallons. While driving it back to the gas station, curiosity got the better part of me and I got all over it. -Not one single ping, knock or anything came out of that engine.

I thought that when they tuned these cars, they would also advance the timing as far forward as possible before detonation. If this is true then running a lower grade fuel would allow for this pre detonation right?

Did I just get a half-ass tune job or what?

it's possible, but it depends on your setup. timing is advanced until it starts detonating or power stops increasing (buffer zone). if detonation is present then a few degrees are pulled back out for safety. it's possible that you have a buffer zone and are lucky.
