Not charging

Post by alackofspeed »

Hi,

I have a k-pro and a K20A2. I can start the engine, but for some reason once the engine is running the alternator isn't charging the battery.

The engine is installed in a standalone capacity in a kit car, and thus there's no EDL input to the ECU.

Do I need to give the ECU a signal on the EDL input to make the ECU switch the alternator on?

I'm not familiar with the workings of an alternator, so please excuse my ignorance. I've checked the 4 pin plug to the alternator, and the three wires going to the ECU have continuity, and the 5th wire has 12v with the ignition on.

Any suggestions would be appreciated - I've clearly missed something simple and rather embarassing!

John.

I would suggest getting the Helms manual (factory service manual) for the RSX and use that to find the problem. You may also need the electrical troubleshooting manual from them as well.

Thanks for replying.

I have a helms manual, but I'm wondering how appropriate it is, given I don't have the ELD wired in.

The ELD is not necessary - it just idles the engine up under electrical load.

The alternator is normally connected to the battery via a fusable link (80A or 100A from memory). It also should get switched ignition to one of the pins in the connector.

Some alternators would damage the output diodes if you ran them with no load (I don't know if this is the case with the Honda alternator).
