PLEASE HELP!!!

Post by chr2hr »

I have a 92 Si with a 94 b18c swap, Hondata s200, cam gears, short ram intake, K&N filter. header and cat back. A couple days ago I decided to replace the cheap filter that was starting to come apart with a true K&N, clean the throttle body and injectors, and replace the thermostat since it was sticking periodically. Yesterday, the car begins to act as if the IAC is going bad, idling from about 1k up to 2k. I called my friend I bought the car from told him about it, he told me to make sure I had the proper amount of coolant in the system, which I did and still no change. Then he gave me another IAC which is supposedly working properly, now the idling up and down has stopped, but now the car wants to continuously idle around 3k. This thing is starting to drive me nuts, and I don't want to just start throwing parts at it if I can keep from it. Also, the check engine light is on, but I can't retrieve the code, because I cannot find the diagnostic plug ANYWHERE!!! Setup is OBD 1 by tha way. ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

It sounds like you have a fairly large vacuum leak. If you are unable to find a way to check your codes yourself, I would suggest going to a Hondata dealer who can use their dealer kit to datalog and check the error codes.

the 92 civic has the svc connector in the same location as an integra:
just in front of ecu and right behind dash in the area between the glovebox door and the passenger side door.
later civics:
just behind and above ecu deeper into the footwell.

if it's never been pulled out it's probably still stuck in the rubber boot and may also have a 3 wire plug in the boot as well.

hope that helps. now go find it.

OKAY!! I found what I believe to be the diagnostic plug. It's not blue, but grey, and was in a green rubber cover thing. I jumped the two wires and the light didn't do anything. So, I bought a usb-to-serial cable and tried to pull the code through the s200 using the datalogger, but I don't think it was connected. There were no error codes showing, and I started the car and nothing was happening on screen. So, today I called the shop that installed the s200 and talked to them. They told me that I should try plugging up the two small air bypass tubes just inside the throttle body. I plugged up the bottom one which I was told went to the thermo valve, and nothing really changed. Then I plugged up the top one, which I was told went to the IAC, and the car idled down around 750-800. I did it again, and it idled down again, and stalled out. Does this mean that the thermo is good and the IAC is bad, or vice-versa?
OH AND GET THIS!!! After the car stalled out I tried to start it back up, but it wouldn't start. I kept trying to get it to start but it wouldn't, then I heard a popping noise under the hood and now the starter won.t turn over so I'm assuming that I've killed the starter too now!!!

Well, I got the starter fixed!!!Stupi solenoid!!!!
Thank goodness for honda/acura having their heads out of their @$$!!!
I had an old LS trans that I'm planning on having reworked that still had a starter on it!!!
Anyway, I cleared the cel, re-replaced the IAC with another one that I had, started the car, and the cel came back on, but it's idling like it should, but the cel came back on!!!! I guess I'll take it to the shop I talked to, on Monday. They said it sounds like a phantom code, but if that were the case, clearing the cel should have fixed the problem, right? I tried to connect my laptop to the s200, but I;m not sure what the problem was, it seemed like it wasn't connected. It pulled up what sensors were connected, but it wouldn't update anything, and it didn't pull up any cel's, so I'm going to take it like I said, Monday!!

Just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone that gave me a hand with this.
You were a great help!!!

when you jumped the svc connector did the cel go out or just stay solid?

there are 2 ways to stick a paperclip into it...one way will not yield any contact w/ the pins inside the plug. make sure you stick it in the holes nearest the wide end of the plug.

You're talking about putting the paperclip in the "front" side of the connector, where the female plug WOULD go, and where those pins from the female plug WOULD make contact, correct? That's the only way I know how to do it, or, back-probing the connector, and I've also heard of some techs even cutting the connector off, putting the two wires together, when they need to, and then disconnecting and covering them when not in use. Good idea, bad idea? The cel did flash, like it was going to start the process, but then stayed solid, and didn't do anything. I know it's not a bad ECU, or at least I don't believe it to be, the s200 light stays solid, no flashing. It just acts like the throttle is sticking since I did the maintenance to it, air filter, thermo, etc. It wants to idle around 1500-2k now, and the cel is still on. Starting to think that it's in the throttle body, map sensor, thermo valve, or tp sensor. I just don't want to start throwing parts at it hoping to fix it. I may go ahead and take it over to the shop I was talking about, and let him take a look at it.

NEXT!!!
Okay, I pulled the trouble code. It's a #6-Coolant temp sensor, which seems reasonable, I guess, since the light didn't appear until I replaced the thermostat. It was plugged up(I checked that first of course). That still does't explain the high idle situation, does it? I did notice yesterday that I have a rather large exhaust leak, where the header meets the rest of the system. Apparently I need to find a JDM collector to fix the problem.
Anyway, any and all input on this is greatly appreciated!!!!

YEEEAAAHHHH!!!!

Well, to update the ongoing cel/idle saga, I fixed the check engine light last night (temporarily). The rubber plug inside the coolant temp sensor has come loose, so I'm either gonna have to find a way to keep the rubber in the connector, or replace the connector. So that takes care of the cel!!!
As for the idling problem, I started retracing the vacuum lines, and I found that where the top pcv valve plugs into the rubber grommet/hose on the intake mani wasn't actually plugged in and that the grommet part had come out of the hole in the mani. So, now, I've got to try to get the grommet back into the hole in the mani today!!!!
I just want to say thank to everyone who did their best to try to diagnose and repair my car, over the internt, sight unseen!!!THANX!!!
I'll try to keep things updated and let ya know bout my new project(s)!!!
