Turbo Questions

Post by DaX »

I just nabbed a turbo today from a Plymouth Laser. I know, I'm going the cheap route, but it's all I can afford. I'll be following the guidelines in Honda Tuning's second to last issue on budget boosting. I think the turbo is equivalent to a T25. It has an internal wastegate. Is this necessarilly a bad thing? I don't plan on boosting above 15 lb. maximum on my B18 after building the bottom end. If this internal wastegate is a problem, is there a way to maybe weld it shut and use an aftermarket one? I'm not looking at getting this thing on any time within the next few months, so I'm not in a big rush here.

Also, I notice there are three hard lines going into the turbo and one coming out [oil return line]. Why would a turbo need three oil feed lines? Am I just running completely down the wrong road here? Should I go pull a turbo off another type of car and start with that?

INPUT.....

the turbo is almost certainly water cooled - hence oil in at the top of the centre bearing and oil return to the oilpan at the bottom
Water in/out at the "sides". I used the water feed from the heated supply to the throttle body - as I didnt want to reheat my intercooled air :)

You can just see the braided water hoses for my T28 in the pic on my site
