Updated to KManager 1.2.1.6 but cannot reinstall USB driver!
Today I tried upgrading my KManager version from 1.2.1.3 to 1.2.1.6. Now I cannot install the USB drivers and so cannot connect to my KPro! Here's what I did:
1. I had 1.2.1.3 installed and working perfectly.
2. I uninstalled 1.2.1.3 and the USB drivers via Add/Remove Programs.
3. I ensured that the KManager install folder was removed, and then rebooted.
4. I downloaded and installed 1.2.1.6.
5. I plugged in my KPro and followed the USB installation instructions.
6. The new device (showing as "Hondata K-Series ECU") was found, the New Hardware wizard launched, I pointed to the KManager install folder (c:\Program Files\KManager) for drivers, but then the dialog returns saying something like, "Could not find the appropriate software/drivers onn your computer..." !!
I tried this several times, on TWO different laptops (both originally had 1.2.1.3 working fine), to no avail. Same result every time. I also tried the "Update USB drivers" option in KManager, and it completes without errors, but it doesn't really accomplish anything as the KPro still shows up in Device Manager as NOT having drivers installed! In fact, I have never seen "Hondata USB Drivers" show up in the list of installed programs (Add/Remove Programs) since I uninstalled the 1.2.1.3 version.
Apparently the driver files do not "match" the device. No idea why. I was using 1.2.1.3 just fine yesterday! Any ideas?
Here is some other info that might help debug:

More info about my setup, in case it helps...
- 2004 Civic Si K20A3
- JRSC-R w/ 440cc injectors
- Denso Iridium IK22 plugs, ground wire relocated to valve cover bolt
- AEM V2, DC shorty header, high-flow cat, Apex'i WS-2 catback
- KPro'd PRB (RSX-S) ECU running tuned EP3 (PNF) JRSC-R calibration
- Last calibration uploaded using KManager 1.2.1.5 (by tuner, not me)
- Brockway Engineering R920 Racer Display (reads from OBD-II port)
- No aftermarket gauges whatsoever
Everything worked perfectly with KManager 1.2.1.3 since February, on two different laptops. I ran the JRSC-R base map (uploaded by me using 1.2.1.3) until April, when I then ran a tuned map (uploaded by my tuner, using 1.2.1.5). Since being tuned using 1.2.1.5, I still used 1.2.1.3 (purely for datalogging, no uploading) without issue.
Now today when I tried to update my own KManager install from 1.2.1.3 to 1.2.1.6 (as per first post), BOTH of my laptops will not correctly recognize the USB driver files and setup for the "New Hardware" fails to complete.
I cannot install the drivers on either laptop now, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both 1.2.1.6 and 1.2.1.3 many times. I'm guessing this is a file versioning issue, and both of my laptops are now "dirty"?
I'm not sure if my tuner's laptop (running 1.2.1.5) will still work. I assume it should. But he is quite a drive away, so I have not arranged to check with him yet.
Any ideas please?? I hope this is a software issue and not KPro failure!!?! I would pull out the ECU and look for physical signs of KPro damage/failure, but since the car is running perfectly still, I'd rather not touch it!
Again, the car runs perfectly, and the information that my R920 display shows indicates that everything is as it should be (in terms of AFRs, idle RPM, etc.). And the USB connection was also working perfectly (i.e., I was able to connect using both my laptops with 1.2.1.3) since Feb, I just can't anymore, after trying to upgrade to 1.2.1.6, due to not being able to install the USB drivers!
Thanks!

First question is why were you uninstalling the previous version before installing the new version? Anytime you upgrade software you should just install it letting it over write the previous version. The best way to upgrade is to go to "Help" and "Check for updates".
Based on your description of the problem it sound as though you have possibly damaged the K-Pro board. Before trying to send it in, I would recommend that you take it to your tuner and have them check it with their laptop without doing any types of updates to see if it is something you have done wrong on your laptops.
If it is still having problems for the tuner, please have them give us a call while they have everything in front of them with your car.

Thanks for the reply.
Ya, I guess I thought uninstalling the old version first would be "cleaner" :-(
How might I have damaged the KPro? Do you mean physically? Or can it be damaged just from all this software churn?
If I did nothing at this point to try to remedy the situation, would you expect the KPro to "deteriorate" and eventually damage the ECU to a point where the car won't run either?
Basically, I can't afford much down time with my car, so I may have to run it as is for now even if it does turn out to be damaged KPro. Oh, my tuner (Neetronics, in Ontario, Canada) is also a KPro installer (i.e., they do the daughterboard installs on-the-spot). I didn't buy the KPro from them, however. Is there any chance that if it turns out to be KPro damage, that they could fix it on-site rather than me having to send in my ECU?
Please advise.
In the meantime, I'll get in touch with the tuner to arrange to try on his laptop.

One more thing...
I also have a third laptop (also running XP SP2, up-to-date), that is a KManager virgin -- no version of KManager has ever been installed there. It is clean.
Do you think it would be worth trying a clean install of KManager 1.2.1.6 on this machine and seeing if it works, or do you suggest not touching anything else until trying on the tuner's laptop first.
I definitely don't want to risk making anything worse, like having my car not run.

Really? Are you able to connect the KPro and get online from KManager at least?
I can't even get my laptop to correctly install the KPro USB device drivers -- it keeps telling me that the appropriate software cannot be found, even though I point the wizard at the KManager install folder.
I don't know what's up.

No not yet I'm reading more into the problem. It seems when they updated the usb drivers and started changing stuff like the VTC PNF and ITBs its freaking out the install and now people that are tuned are getting different values.
Hondata can you put the old version back up? There is something up with the update.

Well, I met up with my tuner and tried it with his laptop (1.2.1.5) and everything worked fine. I also got a copy of 1.2.1.5 from him and installed it on my "virgin" laptop (never had any KManager before), and it also works fine.
So, I'm not sure what happened to my other TWO laptops that were running 1.2.1.3, then uninstalled 1.2.1.3, then installed 1.2.1.6. Now neither of these laptop can correctly install the USB drivers for KPro -- exact same symptoms on both machines (see first post).
Can anyone (preferably Hondata) tell me how I can "clean" my laptops to a state equivalent to having NEVER installed any version of KManager before? I'll remove the KManager from Add/Remove programs, and delete the KManager program files folder.
Where else might there be files leftover from KManager? System folders? What about registry entries? Especially CLSIDs pointing to old DLLs and SYS files?
I'm confident that if I can *fully* clean my laptops, that I will be able to install the latest KManager and be up-and-running again. I'd rather not blow away my laptops and reinstall the OS just to get this working. There must be a way for me to remove all KManager files/registry entries without formatting my drives!
Please advise.

As per the first post, I've tried this. Well, unfortunately, I uninstalled KManager AND the USB drivers from Add/Remove Programs. Since then, no matter what version of KManager I install, I run into the issues with the USB drivers not installing successfully.Hondata wrote:From 'Add/Remove Programs', uninstall 'Hondata K-Series ECU Drivers'. You don't need to uninstall KManager.
Download KManager from the website, reinstall.
So, it would seem that there is something "leftover" on my two non-virgin laptops that make it different from my virgin laptop.
Right now, both of my non-virgin laptops have 1.2.1.6 installed, but both of them cannot connect to the KPro as they both cannot successfully install the USB drivers (pls see first post for details).
I believe that if I can make these laptops 100% clean (as if KManager, any version, has NEVER been installed), then I can do a fresh install of 1.2.1.6 and it will work (just like how it did on the virgin machine).
Aside from files copied to the KManager install folder (default c:\Program Files\KManager), can you tell me exactly what/where other files are copied onto the machine during install (of either KManager or USB drivers)? As well, what registry entries are made duing install of either KManager and USB drivers?
I found one registry entry that specifies the highest KManager version installed. Any others?
I could do a bunch of digging/searching to figure this out, but since you have access to the KManager installer source code, I figured it'd be better to ask you first.
Thank you much.

My USB drivers never install correctly either. But I can get it online with the ECU. But when I disconnect and reconnect I have to go through all the motions again of having the drivers install then fail then works then have repeat after unpluging laptop..
Can u make a list of what KManager is adding to the reg so I can clean out and try a fresh install.
