Stock 2004 RSX-S calibrations

I have a completely stock 2004 RSX-S. It has surging problems near the VTEC switch point. It throws "random misfire" codes.
I checked a few obvious things: fuel pressure, fuel filter, spark plugs, injectors. No luck finding anything wrong. The engine is mechanically in great shape: only 12000 miles of use. (not under warranty, long story). I became convinced that I had a faulty map.
I bought a KPRO on ebay and have been experimenting. I tried the K20a2-rsx-stock.kal and found that I had the same surging. I modified that map to reduce the switch point lower boundary by 400 rpm, and the upper boundary raised to 6200 RPM and 25 kPa. This seems to eliminate the problem.
I'd like to try the K20a2-rsx-stock-tuned.kal... Here's my question, finally: What is the "stock-tuned" map designed for? Is this the #4 reflash that I hear about? Is it designed for power? Economy? Overall drivability?
Thanks, Cap
