USB cable problem. "update" found problem but cant

I have done everything I can think of to fix this issue, the connection will only stay up for a few seconds.

I have used 3 different cables one of which was a very expensive gold plated USB cable.
I have tested both my laptops and a friends Hondata and they both work just fine,
I swapped out my ecu and put my friends one in my car and still had the same problem. I have got all the latest drives etc installed. I have also sent away for the new USB cable from Hondata

Can you guys help with this as I really need to start logging as Im also having same other issues with the Car,

Have you modified your cars ignition system in any way?

No it?s totally std. The mods are the normal manifold, exhaust and Airbox upgrades. I also in the last few days installed an earth wiring kit.
Its so annoying as I cant datalog the other issues Im having.

Ok I have found what the problem seems to be but I can?t fix it.

If I unscrew the ECU and leave it hang lose it doesn?t drop the connection but as soon as I put the ECU back into its normal position it drops the connection after a few seconds, I think the cable might be touching off something but I cant see anything in its way,
Have you come across this before? and if so how can I get around it as I don?t want to leave the ECU hanging lose when Im driving.

On thing I have noticed is the sotware sees the ECU as a PRB ECU when in fact its a PRC ECU not sure if that means anything

I always use an in car power adapter for my laptop so my ecu and laptop have a common ground. I don't know if that will help you out or not, but unless you have something litereally grounding/shorting out in a way not designed, perhaps it would help to have a common ground to improve usb communication. I don't know if this is even potentially right, but I used to have the problem some times and I started doing this and havn't had a dropped usb connection ever again. My experience in the computer hardware / networking side tells me that common ground can cause communication issues across devices, so that was my premis for doing that.

check to make sure that the screw holding the K-Pro board in is tight.

Hondata installed the K-Pro into the ECU I think? that is what the Tuner told me anyway. I know for 100% he didnt do it as I was in the shop the morning the ECU arrived in the Post.

I will open the ECU and make sure the K-pro tight I didnt think of that TBH

Did you happen to notice / make sure the little sticker over the usb hole was returned to the correct location?

There was no sticker :oops:

Well I think its sorted now, I had a very helpful chat with Hondata and after a lot of electrical tape its seems to be logging now I had a quick 10 minute drive it droped the first two times but after that it stayed loggeding for about 15 minutes with the engine on.

I'm having the same problem with my K-Pro.

I will plug in the USB cable from the ECU in to my laptop, and as long as the car is off it will have connectivity with the ECU indefinitely. However, once I start the car I will loose connectivity in 5 seconds all the way up to many 60 seconds (give or take), and Hondata KManager as well as Device manager lose connection with the ECU. I physically have to remove the USB cable from the laptop, and then reinsert the USB cable to gain connection once again. The laptop will usually lose connection more quickly a few seconds or so) the more times I try.

I have the supplied USB cable (cables to go) from Hondata, Belkin, generic, and finally the USB cable (w/ ferrite core?) Hondata sent me. I?ve tried 3?, 6?, and 10? cable lengths. I?ve tried a variety of Dell Inspiron laptops model 9300, 6000, 4100, and 600m, as well as an HP laptop which I can?t remember the model number of. All brand/models experienced disconnects.

However, when I brought my desktop computer in the garage and connect it via USB to the ECU I ran the car for about 15 - 20 minutes and then shut the car off, and turned it back on for another 10 minutes and did not experience any disconnects. I?m assuming because my desktop computer was grounded?

I updated the USB drivers and KManager from the latest on hondata.com.

Have you tried plugging your laptop into your cig lighter like I have been doing? I think grounding is a very real issue, heck, when you use a wideband on a dyno you wrap a grounding strap to the exhaust / frame -- why not make sure the laptop and car have the same ground. Ever since I started doing this with my laptops i've never had a problem dropping connection since.

You may be right; the only problem is I don't have the cig adapter for my laptop. I was actually thinking of buying one just so I could run the laptop for anything in my car without worrying about battery life.

However, even if it did work; I would like to resolve the problem without the dependency of a cig adapter. The cig adapter is somewhere around 100 give or take.
