How is the S200 used for tuning ?

When one has acquired the S200 Hondata system, does it have to be connected to the ECU all the time or just initially until the chip is tuned ?
Is the process all about using the S200 system to program a Hondata chip which is placed in your ECU to run like any other chipped ECU without a full-time connection to the S200 box interface ?
I am considering to purchase this system but would like to know exactly how it works and what is necessary to program it. I have no Hondata programmers near me where the car is in Jamaica, so I need a clear picture of what's involved and what I need to get.
