ignition timming

I'm a little confused. When hondalogger or romeditor refers to ignition advance is it refering to spark after tdc or is it refering to how much the ecu is advancing the spark from the base timming set at the distributor? for example: if hondalogger says that the timming advance is 40 degrees and I have the distribuor retarded to 16 deggrees does that mean that that the ecu is advancing the the spark 40 degrees starting 16 degrees after tdc.

Hondalogger shows total ignition advance. For example when it shows 40deg, it means that ECU is advancing timing by 24 deg (considering base timing is 16deg). Palmlog shows only the degrees the ECU is advancing timing

ok, that is what I was thinking. Let me ask another question then. The car is boosted so what is a safe advance when the car goes into boost. Right now at part throttle or in vacum hondalgger says that the advance is 30 to 40 degrees which is really 14 to24 degrees advance. As soon as i get into even just the smallest amount of boost hondalogger says 21 degrees which is really 5 degrees advance. Is there a rule for how much to retard timming for boost? No matter how much boost the car sees it stays steady at 5 degrees and doesn't change. From what I understand the timming is supposed to continue to change as the boost pressure does to prevent things like bearing fauilure which is what I just recovered from. The motor is newly rebuilt and I'm really worried about timming being the reason for the bearing failure. I've always supected tunning as the cause for the bearing failure but now i have hondalogger to show me what the car is actually doing.
