Faulty Hondata 4 bar Map Sensor - Analysis

Post by NC77583 »

tl:dr - I have a faulty Hondata 4 bar map sensor. Could I possibly send it to Hondata so we can investigate and figure out why it failed and/or what failed inside it? I could even bring it to your Torrance office.

The car: '98 Civic Coupe, turbo B18C1, Hondata S300.

The issue: While at operating temp (~190 F), the car may randomly - at any point and without warning - shut off. This has happened to me at intersections while stopped, and at 80mph on the highway. Upon trying to start, it cranks but doesn't start. It will maybe fire for one or two revolutions then return to cranking.

The diagnostic process: After connecting my laptop and datalogging while this issue is occurring, I see the MAP is reading boost (lost of it, like 40 psi) while the car is OFF and while cranking. Tapping the map sensor with a screwdriver while looking at my laptop, after one of the taps, I see the MAP reading go to zero, and the car starts and functions normally. This solution works about 80% of the time, but the remaining 20% results in me being stranded, missing appointments, and usually a day wasted going back home in a tow truck.

The solution... or is it?: I finally bit the bullet and bought another Hondata 4 bar map sensor a couple weeks ago. I kept it in the glove box with a screwdriver, ready for it to happen again. And it did, just a couple days ago. Same exact symptoms every time, except this time I had the new sensor ready. Removed old sensor, installed new one, and it worked immediately.

Any help is appreciated, as I would hate for this to happen again.

Sorry if this post doesn't really fit in this section, I couldn't find a better place for it. Please feel free to move it.

Thank you,
Arthur S.

I'm sorry, but it is out of warranty. We do not offer failure analysis for parts like this.

Is the sensor mounted on the top of the throttle body?

Ah, ok I understand. I was mostly concerned with understanding root cause to prevent it from happening again.

Yes, mounted on top of a Skunk2 throttle body, bolted to a Skunk2 "Pro Series" intake.

Could have been moisture, but really impossible to say for sure.
