Closed loop glitch?

Post by Furble »

Had a strange occurrence today. I don’t have any logs or any of that and I hope I can’t repeat it because that would indicate there is some sort of problem that isn’t a glitch.

What happened was after some aggressive driving which involved some wheel hop (despite traction bar) which is always a bit rattling maybe 15 minutes after that I pulled into my garage and just before shutting her down I noticed the AFRs were a bit lean. Not crazy lean or anything, and fine for a lean idle, and it makes sense it would idle lean as at that time it was well heat soaked, but I never see a lean idle because closed loop takes care of that for me. It wasn’t cazy lean, only 15.5:1 but again I never see that at idle because closed loop fixes it.

So I reved it up a little and the AFRs were fine as the map is good but after it went back to idle right back to 15.5. So I had to winder if closed loop was on or not. Checked the diagnostics section of the app and sure enough closed loop was off when it should have been on given it the RPMs and all the other conditions which must be met for closed loop to activate were all where they are supposed to be for closed loop to activate based on my calibration.

I wondered if the wheel hop/aggressive driving had rattles something loose but my PLX gauge was reading just fine and it matched perfectly the AFR as displayed by the Hondata app so this tells me the wideband system was functioning as expected as well as the integration with the s300.

There were no CELs or DTCs, checked that both on the dash and the Hondata app and otherwise everything seemed fine.

So I shut the car off, and turned it back on a second later and closed loop came right on just like it should after the normal startup delay before it activates.

So it kinda seems like a glitch occurred? Has anyone ever seen or reported a glitch like this? Might it not be a glitch? If not a glitch what are some guesses? The car has been as it is for 6 months now and have never noticed this scenario before.

The relevant details on the setup (if more details needed lmk):

Obd1 b18c1
Hondata s300 v3
PLX Wideband O2 (their newest version) with their SM-AFR controller and their digital gauge. Analog output going to s300 on D12 with required 0.1uF capacitor on C42 as specified by the user manual. This setup has been problem free till this strange incident. Wideband controller is grounded direct to thermostat housing. My voltage offset is effectively zero (can’t remembut exact number but it is something like 0.01v or 0.02v).

You will need to record as this happens and include the calibration it is running from as well.

I even have a toggle switch to turn on onboard logging and I didn’t think to turn it on which was dumb. Hopefully don’t see this again but if I do will flip the switch.
