Knock Retard at VTEC transition

I'm starting to troubleshoot at knock retard that occurs on cylinder 1, which often occurs near a VTEC on-to-off transition. It does not always occur so that makes me think it might be something rattling around. Perhaps, valve lash? I remember my RSX had surprisingly tight exhaust valve lash.
