Intermittent Limp Mode on S300
Intermittent Limp Mode on S300
Hi all,
I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I've been having intermittent issues with S300. Most days my car will start and drive fine. Periodically, the car will start to hesitate and stutter... once this starts happening the car will go into limp mode, running very rich until I quickly pull over and turn it off. The CEL will turn on while this is happening but there are no codes to read. I'm thinking that the car is actually turning off and that's why the CEL is showing. This has happened anywhere from idle to highway driving at a constant speed.
The mod list is as follows (roughly):
B18C1 Bottom End
Supertech 11.9:1 Pistons
Skunk2 Forged Rods
ACL Race Bearings
JDM B16 Head
Skunk2 Tuner Series Stage 2 Cams
Supertech Flat Faced Valves
Supertech Dual Valve Springs
Supertech Bronze Valve Guides
Skunk2 LMA
Skunk2 Ultra Series Intake Manifold
Skunk2 70mm Throttle Body
Walbro 255 fuel pump
AEM FPR
AEM Fuel Rail
RDX Injectors
Vibrant J-Spec 421 Header
WS2 Exhaust
I have brought the ECU to an authorized Hondata Dealer and they told me that the board soldering job is fine. He used a Hondata socket tester and all LED's were green. I'm wondering if it's the Hondata itself that is giving me issues. Usually when I unplug the ECU and plug it back in, it will get me home. A combination of reloading the map and unplugging the ECU will usually halt the problem for the time being.
Attached is my map and a datalog of the issue happening.
Thanks,
Matt

Re: Intermittent Limp Mode on S300
What is the serial number that is on the s300 board inside the ECU?
Who socketed the ECU?
Have the capacitors all been replaced in the ECU?

Hi Spunkster,
Thank you for the timely reply.
Attached is a photo of the board in question.
It was socketed by Speed Factor in Winnipeg, MB.
The capacitors have not been tested.

Re: Intermittent Limp Mode on S300
Since the capacitors in the ECU are at least 25 years old, I would recommend that you first try replacing them and see if that resolves the issue. The capacitor kit can be purchased at: https://www.hondata.com/products/access ... acitor-kit
The ECU can also be sent in for this upgrade as well: https://www.hondata.com/downloads/ecu_s ... g_form.pdf

Hi Spunkster,
Replacing the capacitors sounds like a great idea.
On the form I noticed that there is a $0 shipping fee for socketing - does this include the reliability upgrade?
How do I proceed with shipping?

Re: Intermittent Limp Mode on S300
Standard shipping is included in the $50 cost.
Re: Intermittent Limp Mode on S300
So I just fill the form out and ship it out with my ECU and $50 cheque through Canada Post / USPS and the return shipping is paid for via my $50 payment?

Re: Intermittent Limp Mode on S300
We do not accept personal checks, and international shipping is extra as it says on the form.
Re: Intermittent Limp Mode on S300
Is it possible to have the ECU shipped from Canada to you guys and have it return shipped to an address in the US free of charge? I typically order parts to a parts depo in Pembina ND - that would probably be easiest for me. I would PM you about this but it doesn't look like I'm able to.
Re: Intermittent Limp Mode on S300
How it is shipped is up to you.
