D17A2 randomly dies

Info
- 2002 Honda Civic D17A2 turbo
- PRB K-pro v4 with cam gear
- KManager version 4.2.6
- 50 trim turbo setup, 2.5 Motorola MAP sensor, modded RSX-S injectors, Walbro 255, NGK BKR7E

The car runs fine most of the time, cruises in vacuum, part-throttle boost, and WOT fine. I have tuned the map to be near-perfect in fueling and conservative in ignition timing, based on one of the provided basemaps.

Over the past month that I have driven the car, it has randomly died four times on four different instances. The first time at 2k RPM leaving a light. The second time at about 2k RPM leaving an intersection. The third time about 3k RPM into a first gear pull. The fourth time at around 2k cruising in 2nd gear.

Each time, the car just dies. The engine cuts off and the revs start falling, and the dash lights come on, as if I clicked the car off then back on. I've noticed each and every time, the car will loudly backfire once. After the backfire, it'll start and run normally.

I have checked,
MAP sensor (gave the wiring and sensor a shake while idling)
ECU wiring (also gave it a shake)
Timing (dead on the marks)
Grounds (cleaned every one)

The ECU detects no codes. I have enclosed a copy of the calibration. I cannot get a datalog because it happens randomly and when I'm in traffic.

You will need to datalog until you capture this happening so we can see what might be going on.

Here is a datalog I managed to grab. It isn't the best but I'll be trying to get another. It cut off at the 0:15.75 mark.

It appears that you are running very very lean when this happens. I would say that you probably have some kind of fueling problem.

Spunkster,
I am seeing what you're saying on the log. I'm going to try replacing the fuel pump/main relay tomorrow.

My fuel setup is:
Walbro 255
RSX-S injectors
Stock line/fail
Returnless fuel setup

I'm assuming:
Fuel pump is good (usually don't fail intermittently)
Fuel hoses are good (car runs and drives most of the time)
Injectors are not the problem (chances of all failing at once are slim)

So I'm pinpointing relays, wiring, grounds, and ECU. Does this sound right?

You will just have to use process of elimination to narrow down where the problem is.

Spunkster,

I checked the relay and it was good. Hitting and heating it with a hair dryer, I could not get it to replicate. I noticed cracks on the fuel tank cap so I replaced that (integrated fuel filter too). Didn't have the problem for a while until today.

It was really bad, I couldn't drive 100 feet before it cuts out. Finally, I unplugged the battery and reconnected it. Got it to drive me almost all the way home then it started acting up. Did the battery reset and it immediately was fine.

Could this be an ECU issue? If it is, how can I get it checked out?

I would recommend that you try this ECU on an RSX or some other vehicle with a K-series engine swap. ECU's generally do not have intermittent issues like this.
