First Hondata Experience + knocking

Post by Morikun »

Hello all!

I'm new to Hondata and have finally fired my car up on a base map (and this is my first post!).

I will be searching / reading the forum profusely to gain more knowledge about tuning Hondas; however, I thought I may as well tell you were I am right now:

I have a freshly built B20v with 11.5:1 pistons, crower stage 2 cams, and 440cc injectors. The base map I loaded (which came with the s300 software) is the b20vtec map. I fired up the car, starts great, set the fuel press., set the timing at idle, etc...very pleased!

I decided to datalog to deem it capable of taking to a shop for an exhaust and dyno tuning, but my question is this:

When I run the car at idle or at light revs the knock sensor maxes out. I noticed the knock sensor option was turned "off." Does that just prevent it from retarding timing under knock, or would that be the reason for the knock sensor to max out?

Obviously, if it's maxing out the knock sensor for legitimate knock then I ain't driving this puppy anywhere until I get the knock under control.

To be more accurate, I'm running the latest version of s300 v3 (2.5) and the base map is the LS VTEC ITB's 440inj map.

It's a P72.

I have a very short datalog to show, but I'm not sure how to upload it to the forum.

A B20 does not have the correct location to mount the knock sensor so that could be part of the issue. Also aftermarket pistons can make a lot more noise than stock and be giving false knock readings. You really need a way of listening for knock with headphones to be able to ell if what you are seeing in datalogs is actual knock or false knock.

Which device for listening to knock would you recommend

This may be the issue; not only is the B20 knock sensor not where b-series motors usually mount them, but I'm also running aftermarket rods/pistons.

On another note, the "Knock Box" website only distributes wholesale to dealers. Anyone know who might distribute them in the USA?

P.S. This site (and Spunkster) is really helping me gain knowledge about Hondata!!! I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can :)
