suppression diode (type 1N4004) for boost solenoid

Hi,
Is this still a must when using a Hondata boost solenoid?
It also state this is how it should be hooked up...
"It is recommended to install a suppression diode (type 1N4004) near the boost control solenoid with the anode (stripe end) connected to +12V and the cathode (non stripped end) connected to the wire that runs to the ECU."
If I understand correctly it will look like a letter "H" with the diode being the horizontal piece in the middle?
I'm seeing 1A and 4A diodes. Which one should be used?
