JDM EP3 CTR knock issues

Hi all,

The K20A in my bone stock (ok, it has a cat-back exhaust) JDM EP3 CTR (2002) knocks audibly and measurably at 3000-4000 RPM at light loads. It's fine with normal highway driving, but as soon as i hit a slight incline, i hear knock. Datalog shows 30degree cam angle, and AFR is fine. I tried both retarding and advancing ignition timing, but neither fixes the problem. In fact, i think the knock gets worse.

For what it's worth;
  • - i tried all stock calibration files which come with K-Manager software, but they all cause the engine to knock heavily.
    - the engine ran perfectly until i K-Pro'd the ECU
    - car has not been on a dyno yet
    - i've been struggling with this for a long time - could i have damaged the engine, and would this damage manifest itself by producing this knock?
I attached my calibration, and catalogs i recorded yesterday (nothing too exciting, simple highway journey). Ended up with over 360 knock counts...

Would love it if an expert eye could take some time to have a look at my files and give me some advice...

Cheers,
PJ

Can you please trim the datalog down to just show the problem area and then upload it here?

I wanted to do that but couldn't figure out how? Can i find the instructions somewhere? Couldn't see it in the help file, but maybe i missed it.

You just right click in the graph window and select new start and end points.

You might try enabling the stock knock logic control and see if that has any effect.

Did you install the exhaust system at the same time as the K-Pro?

I'll try that, thanks.
The exhaust system was on the car when i bought it, so it was there before the K-Pro.

Update; that worked, Spunkster, thanks!

Now for the next question; is there a way to view what effect 'Stock Knock Logic Control' had? Is it datalogged? I assume it retards timing, but by how much? And how does it determine that?....

The help file has very detailed information on this: http://www.hondata.com/help/kmanager/kn ... tsub=knock

Ah yes, thanks Spunkster. Rather embarrassed, usually i'm the first one to tell people to RTFM :-)
Will have a good read of that, and will post further questions when i have some.

Actually, i have noticed that the car now hesitates a fair bit, and takes more time to 'pick up' (poor term, i know). Any tips?

If I understand this manual correctly, when knock control turned of the ECU makes no changes when knock is happening?
So it's very important to use quality fuel or thesame fuel everytime after the hondata is tuned on a vehicle?
Since i have flash MIL enabled on my tune, but control logic not, it shows me when knocks are happening and i can be sure its safe to drive without the control on right?

That is correct for all three.

Does this give an error code as well in the ECU when knock is detected? Only MIL flashing i guess?
What I noticed also is when errors come in ECU, hondata can see them, but they dissapear in the list when they are gone.
Is there a way like with OBD2 scanners, to see them still and to erase them with hondata then?

It will not generate a knock error unless there is no knock sensor. If you have it set to flash the check engine light then that is all it will do. All error codes work just as they would with a stock ECU. You can use Kmanger to read the codes and clear them.

Hi Spunkster,

Oddly, enabling the 'stock knock logic control' parameter seemed to help for a while, but now the knock is back, and the engine runs very sluggish. Today, i had the throttle firmly planted, trying to get the car up an incline in first gear no less, and it would barely respond. Can i datalog the stock knock logic?

Cheers,
PJ
