Random USB disconnect

Post by ninetysixyenko »

Serial # 2068-801645 PRB-A08 0B03
Daughter board # Kpro 11052
Kmanager - V3.2.0 beta
2005 Acura RSX-S

Don't have a Kal or a Log handy.

I had a problem before where my DLC was not working. About a month after I got my ECU back, my WinVista laptop crapped out, so i went out and bought a Win7 64 bit laptop, and ever since then I have been having problems with K-pro communicating with Laptop. It started out as the driver randomly going unfound in the middle of datalogs (probably 1 in 5 logs). It then turned into USB Errors on my laptop it's self, not Kmanager or Kpro. Out of no where, this problem disappeared and turned into another problem. The problem then turned into, every time i turned the the engine off (IGN from II to I) to do some tuning, i would have to disconnect and reconnect the USB for the ECU/Laptop to recognize eachother, along with connection cutting out in the middle of a Datalog.

I finally went out and bought a used WinVista laptop for shits and giggles to see if it would work. The only problem the WinVista laptop has is i have to disconnect and reconnect the USB whenever the IGN is turned from II to I (meaning that if i turn it off (II > I), make adjustments, and flip back to II, the ECU/laptop won't recognize eachother without disconnecting and reconnecting). This didn't bother me much so i've been rolling with it, except now the other day, the WinVista laptop also got the USB driver error message on the laptop. It only did it the once, But along with that, later on in the day, in the middle of driving/datalogging, the CEL came on and went into limp mode, with no error codes on Kmanager, and my scanner not picking up any codes through OBD2. Turned it off then back on and it has been back to normal since (it has only been a couple days, maybe 100 miles)

I've read that the "ghost code" could be a faulty battery/voltage regulator, but first of all, it did it while driving, not while starting up, secondly, my logs did not show any dips in voltage when it happened. Though, I am going to replace the battery anyway just to eliminate it. I'm thinking that i have a more serious problem going on, but Have no idea what it could be, and I have done my research just like last time with my DLC issue. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

A couple of other tid bits of Information:
Both Win64 and WinVista laptops work perfectly fine on my girlfriends flashpro/07 civic SI.
I have tried various Kals and 3 or 4 different Kmanager versions now hoping to help out, but the problem is it's an Intermittant problem, and I can't seem to replicate it when I want to.
Ground is on valve cover and is secure/clean.
ECU USB and pigtails are secure/tight.
ECU look sokay internally.

EDIT - Updated Serial # to the right #. Previous Number was the ECU that had been replaced a couple months back.

Don't remember if they are denso or NGK, but they're iridiums. Pretty sure they're resistored, they are like 8-9 bucks a plug. I've had them in alot longer than i've had k-pro.

Are you using a power invertor or powering the laptop from the cigarette lighter?

Not at all. I do all my data logging around my house(10miles or so) and usually go inside my house to make my adjustments, that's why it usually didn't bother before until lately, because of the more serious issues.

Try replacing your spark plugs with some cheap copper resistor-type plugs and see if that resolves any of the issues.

Ok. Will do. Someone else mentioned my transmission ground too(I have big 3 though). I'll try to get both done tomorrow. Thinking I have a bad plug?

Put copper Resistor plugs in. I'll drive it around for a couple days and do some data logs and see how it goes.

I tried to do some data-logging today, And had absolutely zero luck. This is the first time I've tried since I had the CEL issue. I'll post some screen shots, but long story short, neither one of my laptops would/could recognize the ECU. I tried multiple times to update drivers, uninstalling/re-installing drivers, and i could not get anything to work, Either kept saying device was up to date, could not un-install or error. Every time i plugged my USB in, I got 1 of 2 messages either "Error reading USB device" or "USB driver not recognized, try reconnecting". I also tried doing "test USB" and yes to hondata asking for the test, on both laptops, and still got error doing Test.

Sometimes this happens... I saw the solution on another hondata post, but I cannot find it so I will repost. Let me guess, if you unplug, then plug back in, your world is great:??? =]

There is some issue with intereference coming down the USB cable. Some laptops are more succeptible to this and others are not.

Simple solution is to go to radioshack and buy a ferrite choke. looks like this. http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... Id=2103979

I put both together, wrapped the USB cable around one side closest to the computer as much as possible and clipped them together.

Works great.
