Would you trust Honda's VTC mechanism?

After checking piston to valve clearances on a race motor with fairly aggressive cams, I know I can safely run 50 deg VTC on the low cam, but only about 31 deg VTC on the high cam. I've always limited VTC mechanically based on high cam clearances and I know that is what is recommended for most to follow. However, I would really like to maximize power on the low cam with this motor and I know it would benefit from higher advance at low rpm. This motor is for race use only and will only see about 300 miles a year. If I could get 2 seasons out of it, I'd be super happy. If it blows up, it blows up.. I still care about it a little; hence the reason for asking. But if programmed properly, how comfortable would you be trusting the VTC control by utilizing a stock 50 deg VTC mechanism? I realize the tune would have to be fool proof when switching over and also have to account for any VTC delays. What do you guys think? Anyone doing anything similar?

Thanks in advance,
-Brian
