I have a k20a2 in the civic Si, and I'm not really interested in power at the moment. I would however like to really push this motor to it's Economy limits. How lean can i tune the lite load and cruise, to yield the best Fuel economy.
I have a
K20a2.5 (K20a3 with a2 pistons, and a2 head)
DC sports race header
Cold air intake
Customs 2.25" exhaust with OE muffler.
How lean can i tune part thorttle?
It's still an ongoing process getting the ignition dialed in where it needs to be, but I've got mine tuned down to 19ish at cruise (depending on speed obviously, faster speed means you need to put more load on the motor, which means it's not as safe to run lean).
I've got 0 knocks and the only drawback is that I need to pull and clean my plugs once in a while, and I feel compelled to run Lucas injector cleaner every several tanks - I'm tuned to a near-perfectly stable 12.8 at WOT in all temperatures, so running that rich allows the cleaner to function on the combustion chambers as well.
I'm sure other people will bring up other issues with running lean, but I've had mine this way at P/T for almost a year with no motor issues, power loss, etc. Averaging 31mpg, and that's driving like I stole it every day on my 75mile commute to/from work.

Wow, 19:1 is really lean.
I was just reading a Honda tuning artical. They had put a base RSX on the dyno and were measuring Fuel consumption at different AFRs. According to them anything above 15.8 required to much increase in Throttle and ended up using more fuel.
But i don't know if that translates to real world.

That was an article I wrote in 2005. My testing showed a maximum gain of 2%, and increased fuel consumption past 16:1
