Knocking - how much is too much ?

How much knocking is too much ? Should we attempt to tune the car to no knocks at all under any condition?

If you have different grades of fuel, should we tune based on the lowest grade or tune based on highest grade and let the ignition retard do its own work? Will the car "gain power" on high octane fuel if we tuned it based on low octane.

I have heard conflicting views on that. There are people who told me if the car is not knocking occasionally, you are not giving it a chance to develope maximum power.

When properly tuned there should be no knock. IF you can, tune with the worst gas you plan to ever have to use, or just always get the same brand of fuel.

Fix the source of the valvetrain noise. If you've changed something and the knock noise goes up, then either a clearance is too big, the valves are not being seated gently by the cam or the cam profile is whipping the timing chain around.
