After Market 02 and Kpro, Help please.

Post by gourlay83 »

I am having some issues with my 02 Sensor and would appreciate your advise on a few areas.

Car
Lotus Elise with K20a2 Engine Conversion
PRC Ecu which has been Kpro'd
Engine was a British (PRA) Ecu but i converted the Loom to use the wideband 02 sensor as per the Hondata website.

Problem
I have had some issues with my 02 sensor. When i first changed to a Kpro the a/f ratio wouldn't come up with anything and emissions were through the roof. I created a new base map and everything worked fine.

I started the car up over a winter hibernation and the problem has returned. I have a Error code of 02 Heater Malfunction and A/F reads 10.7.

I am hoping that my 02 sensor is faulty and would like to buy an after market wideband ie PLX.

Can a PLX Wideband be used as a direct replacement for a Stock 02 Sensor ?

Thanks
Alan

No, you cannot use an aftermarket wideband in place of the stock sensor. You cannot run in closed loop with an aftermarket wideband. You could have any number of problems: faulty wiring, bad sensor, or damaged ECU from faulty wiring.

You need to try the process of elimination by trying your parts in a known good vehicle.

Thanks for the reply. I take the after market 02 will be used for data logging and tunning.

I am 100% sure my wiring is correct. Use a relay etc for 02 sensor circuit. Can't say I'm still not worried.

The trouble I have is everyone over here has PRA ECU's ....

Would I be able to check with a narrow band 02 sensor, I have a few good ones in the garage ???

why don't you post just the wiring for your wideband circuit so someone can assist you in whether there is a slight miswire somewhere

I used the Hondata Tech Wiring page. It is wired up exactly the same.

Its been fine for 4 months as well and re checked all connections and continunity (Spelling) when the MIL came on.

I wired up one of my narrow band 02 sensors (heater circuit only) and held it in my hand, when engine starts it heats up in seconds. Tried the same with my wideband and nothing.

Looks like its a faulty sensor after all

Alan

The only concern i have now is i think it may be vibration causing the issue. fairly short manifold etc as its in an Lotus Elise.

Check your o2 heater is not powered on all the time. You'll know if it is as the battery will go flat fairly quickly.

Otherwise it is likely to be vibration. On the dyno when a sensor is powered up and hot, if you drop it there is a good chance it will no longer work.

Alan how did you go in the end. I have just put a K20A JDM in an elise S1 and having a problem. I know the AF ratio is ok as its been dyno'd but i get high (ish) reading. I am using a Denso wideband.

My O2 volts is reading .15 and O2C -30.7mA !!
