Gear sensor reading seems off

Hi guys,

I was datalogging my car and I noticed that the gear sensor doesn't seem to display correctly, especially at freeway speeds. When I'm on the freeway in 6th gear, the gear sensor displays 5. At times, in 5th gear, the gear sensor displays 4. And at times, in 4th gear, the gear sensor displays 3.

Is this a known problem?

I have an 2004 Acura RSX Type-S. I have a JDM EP3 Civic Type-R transmission. When using the stock '04 RSX Type-S VSS with the JDM EP3 Civic Type-r tranny, our speedometer reads 5 MPH slower at freeway speeds. I'm not sure if the tranny swap and VSS makes an difference on the gear sensor.

(off topic, there is a fix for the VSS by changing one of the gears but I haven't done it yet.)

Thoughts? Thanks!

Did you correct the gear ratios in the software?

Yes, I selected "JDM Integra Type-R".

This will only correct the internal ECU speed - the speedometer gets its signal straight from the transmission, so the speed cannot be corrected by the ECU.

Will that (VSS gearing is wrong) cause my gear sensor to be off? Or is VSS and gear sensor are not related?

Thanks.

The gear is calculated from speed / rpm - there is no sensor which determines the gear.

Oh, I see. I will fix my VSS problem and get back to you. Hopefully, it'll fix it! Thanks!
