Will this laptop run Smanager?

Post by vectorsolid »

This will officially be the 5th laptop I've tried. So be kind, I'm an old guy... :) I've read the FAQ's, and I've also read a lot of forum posts. It's possible not everybody that posts about an OS problem has real problems... but here we are.

Here's the story...
first one. to old, no wireless, was advised against it.
2nd one, loaned to me by my son, had XP, worked great. he moved, took laptop.
3rd one, son got me an ultra portable, to frickin small, can't size windows easily in SManager, hard to get to some of the taller windows in parameters and impossible to use while it's sliding around in the car, just to small.
4th one, Got a bigger easier to use machine last summer, with vista. At the time, there was some flickering going on in the SManager windows, and the forums said it was hit or miss as to how it worked. (something to do with 32 or 64 bit... "stuff"). So a buddy re-did the machine with Ubuntu on it (linux)... now it doesn't work with SManager. My wife now surfs porn on it.

On to the 5th "potential" machine.
.. I only need it to run SManager, and be wireless so I can send datalog files from wherever I am, surf forums and get email.

Will this run SManager, perfectly?

An old dude thanks you for your time.

Spunkster,

Will SManager work correctly on the one I mentioned?

I appreciate the note. So the the SManager problems I had with Vista a year ago have been addressed?

I'm not a super user, I'm not following the forums and looking for beta stuff and trying to push the envelope... I just want it to work. :)

Appreciate your time.

Yes , any laptop made in the last 3-5 years should be able to run our software.

Do you mean, "at this point, with the current version of the software". Because I did have a Vista issue a year or so ago.

The way you word it, makes it look like it always worked flawlessly, and if that's the case I didn't need 2 more laptops and I'm a tool for not figuring it out.

And when you say "should", do you mean function like a wheelbarrow with a flat tire should technically work for it's intended purpose, or do you mean work "Flawlessly"?

I feel you're being understandably cryptic. That aside, yes or no, do you feel that above laptop, with it's OS as shown, will run the SManager software perfectly?

I'm not ordering a 5th laptop until I get a 100% positive "Yea buddy" from somebody that knows that kind of stuff. ...lol...

Appreciate your time. :)

As far as the hardware portion goes, anything in the last decade will work.
As for OS, if you've had issues with Vista in the past, I'd bank on it continuing to be an issue.
You 'might' be able to get it to run stable in compatibility mode.
Right click the executable and go to Properties.
Under the properties, hit the compatibility tab, and click the little box for one of the older OS's (XP).

I can't say I have any experience with SManager on Vista, so I can't give you any real pointers on how to troubleshoot.

the only problem I have had the recent service pack of vista is an error trying to download the current calibration from the s300.

Other than that its been pretty friendly.

XP I never had an issue. As for Ubuntu Linux did your friend install WINE the windows .exe emulator?

If he was a computer geek you can also run windows XP in a virtual machine but being on this forum I will assume most of the gear heads here are not as geeky as myself.

Windows XP is the OS of my choice but my current desktop loves Win7 and its running great the only problem is the case is 50 pounds and not portable enough to haul to the garage so I can not tell you if it is as compatible as XP. I use it to build maps and email them to myself to work in the garage.
