When backing off timing, does that make the motor run lean?

if you back off timing and in turn backing off timing you mean retard timing your essentually will richen up the air fuel mixture. if you advance timing your going to do the opposite you can watch this by adjusting your calibration points where u are running rich u can either give it more timing or reduce fuel to lean it out or vice versa if your running lean. its common for boosted vehicles and nitrous vehicles to retard timing -4 deg due to oxygenation to the mixture also to componsate for effective compression on boosted vehicles timing may vary
