Pinging at light loads (cruising)

Post by Hoggy »

Hi,

Datalog shows pinging at light loads (below 45kpa) mainly below 3.5k rpm. It is not audible and usually happens when holding throttle position. No pinging if car is accelerating. Should I detune ignition or ignore it?

Thanks.

Try removing some timing in that area and see if it goes away.

No, it doesn't. Tried dropping 5 degrees and it's still happened. This is after installing crower cams. The ignition maps used were tuned for the stock JDM cams. I was informed couple of local cars with the same cams have the same outcome, and caused by the valve trains.

datalog?

Perhaps it's mechanical noise the knock sensor is picking up?

The Crower & IPS-K2 cams cause valvetrain noise that seems to light up the CEL with false knocks under low rpms. Just make sure you have no knock up top and don't worry about it.

I've dynoed many IPS-K2 and IPS-ME cams and never seen any 'false knock'. Also I've done a few Crowers.

Check the valve clearances - some people were measuring between the cam and follower. The feeler should be a sliding fit.

I can only imagine how loose that must leave the valve clearances.

is the pinging mostly in 5th and 6th. if so try taking timing out by gear. what's your timing values in this area?
