MPH Smoothing

Can anyone assist on explaining what the smoothing under alternate speed input means. I have it set to 5 and Im not sure what it does. Been trying to change it 20 then 5 then 10 and I just cant seem to find any difference.

It is a moving average smoothing for the input. The smoothing number is number of samples.
