Lean spike right at vtec change

Post by Razathorn »

I have a lean spike right where the VTS goes on. I am not getting cut (using the first default lean protection setup) and it's only for literally ONE frame... so, I'm assuming that this is normal and nothing to worry about.

I have a k20a2 03 rsx type-s with injen cai, custom magnaflow exhaust, IMG, TB bypass, grounding, Jackson race header with high flow cat. I have been running around on the cold air calibration.

The day that I got the kpro I loaded up the coldair calibration, setup my overheat preferences, knock indication, and lean protection. I went out and datalogged a few 2nd gear runs to around 8400 or so, along with a few 3rd gear runs as well just to double check my A/F. The leanest I ever got was a 13.5 (this was with stock type-s exhaust).

The next week, I went and got a custom magnaflow exhaust setup done. My exhaust setup is now JRRH (2.25" collector) to carsound cat (2.5 in/out) to 2.75 piping to straight through resonator to 3" straight through muffler.

On the highway, knowing I had lean protection on, I decided to see what the butt dyno said. Eventually I got lean cut (as I expected I might, since I just put the last piece in my air flow puzzle ;)) accelerating WOT.

Later that night I went out with a friend, datalogged, and used conrads instructions for adding more fuel on the high cam fuel tables for the angle(s) that were affected. I got rid of the lean cuts.

That same night I noticed the lean spike on vtec -- it's never cut me, and I can tune to around dead rich right around vtec switch, but I still get a spike right at the switch... rich around it. Right now I have it running a bit on the rich side WOT to be safe.

Thoughts? This is basically the cold air calibation with fuel added in a few places to address a cut. Nothing else has changed.

BTW: the reason I went with 2.75 piping to 3" muffler is because I'm going to be adding a supercharger in the near future... I realize that it isn't the best for mid range N/A power.

Update: I added 5% fuel to the 20 and 30 degree cam high and low right in this area... once again lean right when vtec kicks on... dead rich everywhere around it high and low cam. Kinda confused.
