Not getting a CAM or CAMCMD reading!
Not getting a CAM or CAMCMD reading!
Vehicle - 2003 Acura RSX Type S
Kpro Serial numer - 40538
Software Version - 4.0.8.0
ECU number -37820-PRB-A06-2068-607509-0E15
Kmanager - Version 4.0.8
Calibration - N/A
Datalog - N/A
Car Mods - K24/20 12.5:1 Supertech Pistons, RBC Manifold, IPS K2 Cams, Supertech Valvetrain.
Kpro - Locash Racing - March 16th 2015
Problem - When I went for a tune, my tuner noticed I wasn't getting any CAM or CAMCMD reading. Even changing the values in the tables and doing a pull it still wasn't getting a reading. Also while driving car it wants to stall when I come to a stop. He told me it could either be the VTC Solenoid or the gear itself. I started by replacing the solenoid with a new one from Acura but still not getting a reading. But before I spend the money on a new gear are they know to go out? Could my problem be timing even though the car runs smooth besides my problem? Any help is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance for all info provided.

Re: Not getting a CAM or CAMCMD reading!
I've not seen a VTC go out, but have seen the solenoids fail. However, I think it is much more likely that it either is a wiring problem to the solenoid, or a mechanical problem from the cam / valvetrain install.

Re: Not getting a CAM or CAMCMD reading!
I'm still a bit lost with my problem. The VTC solenoid is what gives cam and camcmd readings in the kpro or is it the intake cam position sensor? Cams have been in the car since 06 but motor was recently rebuild, valvetrain was put back together going by service manual. I'm not sure how, without having problems while car is running the valvetrain could be installed wrong but say something was installed wrong, shouldnt it at least have some readings in the kpro? Sorry for all the questions, i've been trying to research online bc there is no one locally to help me out with this problem/understanding.Hondata wrote:I've not seen a VTC go out, but have seen the solenoids fail. Re: Not getting a CAM or CAMCMD reading!
The valve train was rebuilt? Then you need to pull the valve cover and check the intake and exhaust sensor wheels are correct. Also check the valve timing at the transmission end of the head, using the cam sensor wheels with the engine at #1 TDC.

Yes, everything is lining up correctly when #1 is at TDC.Hondata wrote:The valve train was rebuilt? Then you need to pull the valve cover and check the intake and exhaust sensor wheels are correct. I just want to make sure I'm understanding correctly, the vtc solenoid is what registers cam and camcmd in kpro or is it the cam position sensor?
If I can't figure it out after a few more helpful responses I'm gonna try and see if I can find a shop to look at it.

Using the cam sprockets or the cam sensor wheels?Yes, everything is lining up correctly when #1 is at TDC.
The cam position is calculated from the intake and exhaust cam sensors.

Car runs good, I'm getting power from the wiring.
Could the sensors be bad?
Picture is for example. But mine lines up the exact same way when at #1 is atTDC.

Re: Not getting a CAM or CAMCMD reading!
Yes, that picture is correct. The sensors don't go bad unless something catastrophic occurs. The next step would be to replace the VTC.

Thank you for your quick response.Hondata wrote:Yes, that picture is correct. The sensors don't go bad unless something catastrophic occurs. The next step would be to replace the VTC.
I will replace the VTC as soon as I can, hopefully that will fix my problem.
Just want to clarify, a bad VTC would not read cam angle at all, correct?
Re: Not getting a CAM or CAMCMD reading!
I'm not sure I understand the question. The solenoid and VTC controls the intake cam position. The position is determined from the sensors on the intake and exhaust cams.
What is the origin the ECU? It is the original ECU for the vehicle?

Re: Not getting a CAM or CAMCMD reading!
It is not the original ecu but it is an 02-04 type s ecu.Hondata wrote:I'm not sure I understand the question. The solenoid and VTC controls the intake cam position. The position is determined from the sensors on the intake and exhaust cams.

I was just wondering since I'm not getting a reading for cam or camcmd on the Kpro, could that be caused from a bad Vtc gear?
Sorry for all the confusion, I'm still new to Kpro and K series.
Re: Not getting a CAM or CAMCMD reading!
Was the ECU socketed for KPro when you got it, or was it stock?
Hondata
Re: Not getting a CAM or CAMCMD reading!
It was socketed with the first Kpro version. I upgraded to the 4th gen Kpro a couple weeks ago through Locash.
Re: Not getting a CAM or CAMCMD reading!
Please contact Locash for assistance with this. I have made him aware of the situation.

Re: Not getting a CAM or CAMCMD reading!
OP, did you ever find out the cause of this? I am having similar issue that the CAM & CAMND stays at 0°/-20° at datalog.
was it your ECU or sensors on the engine?
