Erratic vtc angle vs cam cmd

Post by Juliank »

Hello I'm just trying to solve this issue of erratic cam angle when compared to the cam cmd. During certain times the cam will follow the cmd perfectly then during cruising you can see the cam shaking for example cam cmd will be 10 the cam angle will hold 10 for a few seconds then go 5-15-5-12 zig zagging all over the place. Sometimes it will do this even when say climbing from 0-30deg it will spike up and down dramatically as it raises up to 30 then usually overshoot it's command drop back down etc. I'm not throwing any codes, my vtc gear has 10,000km, chain, tensioner, and guides are new, upgraded oil pump.

Prayoonto cams
K24a2 with supporting valvetrain 95lb spring
Kpro v3
30wt oil
S2000 oil filter

I've attached pictures of datalogs showing the problem.

If there's anymore information I'll be happy to provide more

Pictures really don't help. You need to post the calibration used as well as a datalog showing the issue.

i have a few more logs if you would like to see. i changed my kal file so theres no vtc during crusing because it seems dangeous to be cruising on the highway and the cam constantly shaking for minutes at a time.

any insight would be much appreciated!!

Try swapping in a known good VTC mechanism and see if there is a difference.

If the vtc gear change doesn't work what would be my next course of action? I feel like this is causing chain slap also as I've gone through a few tensioners since installing these cams

It could be that these cams are not properly designed and are causing undue stress on the valve train. You should not change the cam gear. You should try swapping the VTC solenoid.

Are you guys with problem running any VTC mods?
I've heard VTC limiter/pin can also cause erratic VTC angle readings.

I was having this same issue with my recent K-Swap and KPro. I know this is an old thread, but just wanted to post what I did to fix it. My K24's cylinder head came from an 07 civic si, which uses a VTC solenoid (15830-RBB-003) with a different part number than the 02-04 RSX type s (15830-PNC-003). Nearly every other K20 or K24 uses the version my si came with, which was likely what the original poster had. When I swapped it for the 02-04 RSX type s version, the jittery cam angles went away.
