P0606 and No Start

Post by odb812 »

- serial number of your FlashPro
FP-S2K-US-30577
- FlashPro Manager version (not 'the latest')
1.6.3.0
- the calibration (as an attachment)
I don't have the file with me at work, can upload later
- a datalog of a problem (as an attachment)
I don't have the file with me at work, can upload later
- what sort of vehicle you have
Honda S2000
- what sort of ECU you are using
Stock honda S2000
- anything about the car which has been modified from stock which may affect the ECU (don't include what sort of rims you have nor stereo etc).
intake, header and HFC are all aftermarket, but still provide for the factory IAT and O2 sensors
- a specific description of the problem
I was on track in the middle of a lap, I had just downshifted and began applying maintenance throttle in the turn. The car lost power and the CEL came on simultaneously. I coasted off of the racing line and the engine died when I stopped. The car will not start and will not jump with a rolling start.

Have you tried uploading a calibration to the ECU? You should also download the most recent version of software form the downloads section of the website.

When the issue happened, I tried both setting the ECU back to stock and uploading the stock "tuned" calibration but neither worked. After that, a friend with the latest version and a wireless 4g card updated the firmware on the flashpro and uploaded a stock calibration but that did not work. In either case it seems like the upload is working properly, I can hear the usual click just before the upload completes. Each time I attempted to start the car, I turned the key to the on position and could hear the fuel pump kick on before I would try to start.

Upload works but the car will not start?

Can you datalog the engine cranking? At there still error codes? Does the throttle still work with key on and engine off?

Yes, the upload seems to work, but the car does not start.

I can datalogging while cranking the engine and upload the logs later. We tried watching the data while we were cranking the car and we could see the injector's duty percentage. I did not check if we could see the throttle with the key in the on position but not while cranking the engine.

FWIW, we tried starting the car with the laptop datalogging, we tried with just the flashpro hooked in through the OBD port, and we tried without the flashpro connected to the car.

This error is not synonymous with not starting. It has to do with knock information being transferred from one processor to another. Since the car was on track and died, there may have been a mechanical problem that caused noise which triggered the error in the ECU, but the mechanical problem is why it is currently not starting. Have you done a leak down and compression test?

I have not done a compression test and the car was running 100% fine until the second this happened. I looked through the datalogs right after it happened and paid special note to knock levels after reading another thread on this forum regarding the P0606 code, but the knock levels are normal.

I also forgot to answer your question regarding error codes. I saw the initial P0606, but after I cleared the code it did not come back.

When you say this is an issue of knock information being passed from one processor to another, could there be a chance that the fault is in one of the processors themselves and not in the information the processors are sending/receiving?

After looking over the logs again, there is a high number of knock events on cyl 1 right before the CEL. Thank you for your help and suggestions. I'll continue to look into what caused the knock, which is likely causing the car not to start.
