Laptop not seeing ECU

Post by mksch666 »

I have a P06 with an S300, SN S300-3772. I plug the ecu into the laptop, turn ignition on and I will see a green LED flash quickly then a red LED will stay lit, these are the two LED's next to the plug. A green LED next to the heatsink is also illuminated. I'm assuming the ecu is powered up correctly and therefore my laptop should see the ecu. Yet I do not see the s300 in the device manager and cannot go ahead with the driver installation procedure. I'm using vista with V 2.2.7.0 smanager. The ecu is in an 89 CRX using a ODB0 to ODB1 jumper harness.

Any help would be appreciated.

When you plug and unplug the USB to the ECU, does the device manager refresh at all?

Can you try this on a known working car?

I tried replugging the ecu into the computer several times and did not see it anywhere in the device manager, also checked under the other non-usb device categories. Just to verify the usb port and the device manager were working, I plugged in a thumb drive, it came up in the manager immediately.

The car works with an ODB0 ecu. I made the ODB0-ODB1 harness and verified continuity between corresponding pins. The ecu seems to be getting power correctly and upon turning the ignition on the dash indicators light up and the fuel pump clicks just it would as it would with the stock ecu. I have not tried starting the car as I want to verify the active calibration before doing so.

I do not have a known working car to test it in.

Cut J1 on the ECU and try to start it with the oem programming.

J1 is within the ECU, a wire or something? This is preventing the laptop from communicating with the ecu?

There was what looked to be a single band resistor at J1. I desoldered it and tried starting the car. It would crank and fire every five seconds but not start. The engine is an ODB0 DOHC ZC with high lift cams. Should the stock P06 fire this?

This would seem to indicate another problem, possibly with the jumper harness, if it would not start. My first issue of the laptop not seeing the ecu in the device manager, seems to be an unrelated issue as long as the ecu is getting power to function. I believe the ecu is being supplied with power correctly because the s300 leds illuminate.

What should I check next?

Ok, I figured it out. The UBS socket on the s300 has the middle plastic locator broken out. The cable wasn't make reliable contact with the contacts in the socket. I could wiggle the cable around and get communication between the laptop and ecu. Apparently the green led will stay lit when the ecu is communicating with a computer?

I reconnected a jumper at J1 using a piece of 20ga wire and started the car using the calibration that was on the ECU. This is a suitable jumper for J1?
