while idling, ignition and cam don't follow table

Post by shimakid12 »

Hi. This might not actually be a problem, but it's something I'm curious about and would like to understand better. During idle, whether the car is warm or cold, it doesn't follow the ignition tables and if I change the cam command tables around the idle area from anything other than zero it doesn't change the command.

I'm wondering if this isn't something that's built into the ecu. I've checked all of my ignition compensation tables and everything is set at zero for the ECT's and IAT's in question. The ignition actually seems to be all over the place while idling, but is on average a good ten degrees different from my map.

Car info:
-Ek chassis
-K20z3 engine low miles, all stock internals
-02-04 ecu part# PRB-305 with v.3 Kpro purchased through xenocrom.
-Engine ground is on valve cover stud, above rubber grommet.
-I currently have no codes or errors
-I'm using k manager version 3.2.4.0
-I've loaded a couple of different maps and tried changing the ignition values around the idles RPM/columns but it still follows the same patter.
-As soon as I give it gas/while driving, it follows the ignition and cam tables just fine
-The car seems to idle pretty good but I can't help but wonder if it shouldn't be idling a little smoother with a smoother ignition.
-While data logging an idle, I notice that not only does the ignition not match the table, but there are streaks where the ignition will smooth out, or straight line for a few seconds and then start going up and down again. When this occurs, you can audibly hear and feel the idle change, almost like a very slight idle surge.

I'm just curious if this is a normal occurrence, or if I've got something set weird in my parameters.

Attached is the current calibration I'm working on. All the cam commands are set at 30 for this save as I was data logging and tuning the entire 30 cam map to work on smoothing out the AFR.

The first data log has a really long idle from cold to warm. There are several short bursts where the ignition will go from being all over the place to straight lining for a couple of seconds, and then right back to bouncing all over the place, which I find really odd, and is what I was talking about where the car almost feels like a very slight idle surge moment. It's not a constant 'up and down' idle surge moment, but a brief change in the sound and vibration due to the ignition settling out.

The second data log is of an already warm start up with all 30 cam for the cam tables. The ignition is all over the place, not matching the table and the cam is staying at zero. Obviously, I don't want my cam to be 30 while I'm idling, but I'm curious why it doesn't match the cam angle it's supposed to be set at.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could take a look at my calibration and logs to see if some light can be shed on the subject for me. Thanks.

This sounds normal.

At idle the ECU uses ignition to control idle speed.

Also at idle the ECU will set the cam to 0.

Okay, I figured this was something like that but I wasn't sure. I know the ecu has a lot of internal control settings that are not necessarily controlled by the Kpro, but I wondered if I didn't have something set up weird in my parameters. That picture looks exactly like what my ignition looks like while idling.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I appreciate all of the help.
