radiator fan override

Post by Jan Niemi »

I've been having some cooling issues and today realized the radiator fan override mph was at 30. My car is boosted with a thick intercooler. I don't believe I ever had this issue with my older s200 without the override feature, and I just started driving the car with the new intercooler and civic radiator (the car is a dc2) Does the stock ECU turn the fan off at a certain mph?

Tomorrow I will set the override mph at 100mph to see if my cooling problems get better. The car only got really hot once after I already pulled over to let it cool (about 230F)..luckily I was watching my oil temp gauge since the stock temp gauge stayed under the 1/2 mark even with the high ECT.

What is the default value for the mph for that feature?

Anyone else play with the mph and see any cooler ECT?

also another question just came up in my mind.. does the override only function up to the set speed? I.E. let's say I set it to 180F at 30mph.. does this mean that above 30 mph the ECU does what it normally would with the fan? Or is the override still in control and not letting the fan run when I'm above 30?

Once a car is moving above a certain mph (about 30-35), there is enough air flow that the fan is no longer needed. This is why most race cars do not even run fans.

I think your problem is that you have a radiator that is too small to be running with boost. You may want to consider a full sized integra radiator.

Yeah, I thought that maybe the thick intercooler is impeding flow and therefore would have less effect on the fan stalling if it's on above 30-40 mph. The car got just as hot with the cooling fan override mph set at 99mph.

The stock sized radiator unfortunately does not fit with the AFI turbo manifold. I know I still have work to do, such as creating ducting to prevent air from bypassing the radiator, need a higher flowing fan, and also put some type of barrier between one of the manifold runners and the radiator, I think they are so close together that heat soak is happening.

Funny thing is it only gets hot above 65 mph and sustained off boost driving. As soon as I slow down, the car starts to cool, or if I downshift and accelerate, the car cools down a little.
