Reaching column 10 under WOT

Post by JUJU »

Is this even possible?

After reading one of the hondatas tidbits of gold, I read that an inefficient air intake would prevent you from reaching that cell and that more power could be made...

So new intake was made, straight 3" pipe with velocity stack, put to the test... very slight improvement but improvement none the less. Manage to stay consistently around 0.98 bar (atomosperic=1) +- 1 under WOT above 3500rpm.

Read another hondata article about building a pressurized box, so did that. Mounted a velocity stack in the bumper feeding it, which was then feeding the stack. Intake Air temps stayed super cool with a 0.01 improvement occasionaly reaching column 10, but only up to about 3500rpm. After that it flattens off around .99 +-1.

The only thing I haven't tried is removing the airfilter all together...

Is that my restriction, is there a big flaw with my intake, or is it just impossible to maintain column 10 through WOT? I live at sea level.

Check your datalogs guys and lets see if anyones actually doing this. To reach column 10 the map sensor has to read 1.03 or over.

I've attached a pic of the intake system for scrutiny.

Col 10 is 1045 mbar. It is above average sea level pressure i.e. it is positive or "boosted".

For me, at RPM below 5000/6000, I could get 101kPa but it slowly drops off to 97/98kPa at 8500rpm. The engine is sucking/consuming more air then the system could provide i.e. maybe some intake restrictions...

Looks like you could get some RAM air effect with your setup but you would probably only see that when you are traveling above 150kph.

P.S. It is amazing how restrictive some airbox can be. I am using ITG Maxogen Induction Kit, as soon as I cover the air filter with housing and pipe, I get pressure drop... not ideal...

I don't have a datalog atm (I'm not on my laptop, and tbh I don't think I've saved any recently) but I've seen MAP readings close to 1psi with my setup - stock motor, stock cams, stock IM, Hondata IMG, TB coolant bypass, Injen CAI, velocity stack covered with a fatter air filter and a small hole cut into the bottom of the bumper to make room for it.

The result is a light ram air effect, since the filter's sticking out the bottom of the car - and since I'm on a fully stock exhaust this results in the intake flowing way more than the exhaust and I see positive MAP readings between 3k (ish) and 4300 (vtec) in 5th and 6th. With a real exhaust setup (and possibly a cam angle tune to go with it), that positive MAP reading would likely go away.
