I'm having a problem lowering the vtec engagment point below 6K rpm's. The car misfires or something and can't engage vtec after that, but it does try. (Feels like when your car is running in limp mode, won't pass 3K ) Setting vtec at or above 6K runs fine.
My tuner seems to think it's something in the ignition system and my mechanic thinks that I need the injectors and/or fuel pump to be upgraded. (All stock 99-00 Si.)
Anyone else ever experience this problem? Anyone know of a fix?
Mods are:
Comptech-I/H/E
Skunk2-Stage 1 Cams/Std High Comp Valves/Intake Manifold/Gears/Springs/Retainers
B&M-Fuel pressure regulator
Hondata S200 tuned mated to a P72
Misc. 2001 ITR Tranny, Exedy 9lbs Flywheel, Organic clutch/pressure plate.
During tuning we replaced:
Distrib. Cap and Rotor
Plugs
Plug Wires
Reset Ignition Timing
No cam timing done until problem is fixed...

Also I believe that my tuner started off with the 99-00 CTR rom, and my car did not run properly with this rom when I first upgraded to hondata and was still using the stock engine internals, not tuned. It felt just like it does now when vtec engaged. Once my tuner switched to a stock GSR rom all the symptoms went away, still using stock engine internals untuned nothing changed execpt for the rom.
I had a problem that sounds similar to that, back when I had a B16a I had a similar setup Skunk2 Stage 2 cams, and every other Skunk2 part they make for a B-series head. When ever I had my VTEC crossover much below 5800 it would do a misfire like you describe. It seemed that when I passed into VTEC quick (first second, maybe third gear) it wouldn't do the misfire, but in fourth or fifth gear (or if I wasn't full throttle) it would do it. I now have a B20VTEC using my same B16 head with all the same Skunk2 stuff, it doesn't do the misfire anymore. I now THINK it was caused from resurfacing the head and block. I didn't touch my cam gears when I built my B16a. I think what fixed it was that when I put my b16 head on my B20 block I degreed the cams(if I remember correct I needed to retard both cams 3 or 4 degrees to zero them out with the engine at TDC). Maybe the Skunk2 cams VTEC lob is sensitive to cam timing from 5000-6000 rpm?
Anyway it's an idea for you to check out.
