98 HONDA Prelude... If I go s200, what do I do about ECU?

I am just getting into the whole ECU thing and I am trying to learn as much as I can before I crack down on my turbo project...

I need to know what I need to do with my ECU if I go Hondata s200. I think it says I need to go OBDI, but Im not really understanding all this yet. People talk about getting their ECU chipped to a P(72,13,ect...) then they also talk about OBD0 OBDI OBDII... is the OBD thing just like the case and then the P.x just about the chips inside that run the model car?

If it is like im guessing above, should I just get an OBDI then use my old P72 chips?

Use an OBD-1 ECU, have it socketed, and then you're ready to run the s200. Nice icon btw...

anyways you gota go a little more in depth with me here... spell out what an OBDI is and verify my guess that the P.x is just the chiping inside it... then tell me what having it socketed is...

Anyhow...

OBD stands for "on board diagnostics" and there are different generations of it. For instance, OBD-0 ECU's came in 88-91 Civics, OBD-1 ECU's came in 92-95 Civic's, and OBD-2 ECU's came in 96-?? Civic's...I don't know what generation ECU comes in Civic's now. OBD-X really has to do with the style plugs on the ECU, and also with some of the programming inside.

If you have and OBD-0 ECU and want to run Hondata, you're going to need to go with a Stage 2/3/4 system. OBD-1 ECU's can run the s100 or s200. If your car is OBD-2, let's say a Civic from 96-01, you'll need to get an OBD-1 ECU and an adapter harness to allow you to plug your OBD-1 ECU into OBD-2 connectors. If you're car is 02-present, you can either have your ECU Reflashed or you can run the K-Pro.

The p28, p06, p72 and all that just let's you know what "program" is in the ECU in it's stock form. Some ECU's have advantages and options the other's don't. Look at the ECU page again and you'll see. Some ECU's are equipped with VTEC while some aren't, some are equipped with a knock sensor while some aren't, and some have secondary intake runners while some don't. You need to pick an ECU for you application based on what you need....are you planning on using an engine that has VTEC? stock knock sensor? secondary intake runners?

When you have an ECU socketed, you hav a 28 pin ROM socket soldered into a location in the ECU along with a chip and some resistors/jumpers. Hondata will do this for $65 if you ship your ECU to them. ok cool... so since I have an H22a in my prelude which is an OBD2 P13, I can get a harness and switch to an OBD1 P72 which has both the VTEC and IAB controlls just like mine... and socketing is just putting the 28 pin socket for the rom card in... excellent thanks for the help man, I get it now!

BTW... so you go to tech man... how many years do you have left? I am heading up to Georgia State U. just down the street from you in august to start college...

Socketing is installing the 28 pin socket and a few other things in the ECU.

My expected graduation date is May or Aug 2006. I've been at Tech since August 2000...still working on my bachelor's. But I work part time too.

If your Prelude is an SH, you can't do the OBD1 conversion, as there will be no controls for the transmission/torque distribution (ATTS) system.

I know... thats why I got a base 5-spd... that atts shit was just more weight anyways...

When an ECU is socketed ... does it matter if the ECU currently has a modified chip in it or does it need to be completely stock? I am considering using the s200 in my '97 Prelude. Any recommendations for a place to find a P72 ECU? Thanks.

I have a Prelude 01 Base w/stock ecu and I want to run the S200. So i have to have my ecu socketed,get a conversion harness, and the S200. And of course get it tuned,hehe. Is that right?
