launch control newbie....got a question

Post by Cha27se »

ok, i know what its supposed to do im just a little confused on how to do it. so i have the launch control set at 4k, am i supposed to just mash the pedal all the way to the floor then dump/feather the clutch, or am i supposed to push the gas down half way till it just sorta pops off the limiter then dump/feather the clutch and floor the gas. i cant really seem to figure it out. seems like it bogs no matter what, i havent tried flooring the gas and dumping the clutch, cause someone told me that wasnt the right way to use it.... any advice on exactly how to use this, maybe i just need to mess with it more im just confused with the gas pedal position

Well, I'm not sure how it's "supposed" to be used, but I've got mine set to a rather conservative 2500 - when I use it I just rev it high enough that it's barely bouncing off the rev limiter, then when it's time to roll, dump the clutch and hammer the gas simultaneously.

I can tell you that if you're using "always on" launch control rather than switch-controlled, it's going to bog down when you launch unless you either release the clutch on the rev limiter's "upstroke" - if you know what I'm saying - or use it how I describe above. I'll post a datalog of one of my launches when I get home, that should give you a better idea of what I mean.

Here's the whole datalog of my trip home from lunch today. I added comments to help explain it, but let me know if you have any questions. You'll have to zoom in fairly far for them to be real readable.

At 6:51 I feather on the throttle to demonstrate how the launch control responds to various levels of throttle input. At 7:09 I do a launch, but it was pretty bad - there was a manhole in the intersection that I didn't see before launching, and when I hit it, my foot jerked back off the gas.

At 9:44 I do a much better launch on decent pavement. You can tell that it's getting some wheel spin/hop because of the jerking motion of the RPM graph.

It wouldn't let me attach the raw datalog (3.8MB, less than the listed maximum of 10MB), so you'll have to unrar it. But here it is.

Gotcha cool, thanks for the help man. I messed around with it a little today, i think its just one of those things ya gotta get comfortable with. Im going to the track tonight and i think ill prob just drive the old fashion way for now. Until i master the launch control business. Thanks for you help though, i really appreciate it.
