knock knock..

Post by scareyourpassenger »

This may be a basic question but do the knock tables in the flash pro determine the amount of knock % required to add to the knock count?

What is the relationship between the knock % in the logs and the numbers in the knock table?

I recently recorded a commute to work where it indicated I had a knock when the knock % was at 15%. There was no knock retard so I am wondering what I should do. I am tempted to leave it since the knock level was so low. It was at a low rpm at about 2k.

After thinking about it a while I may have figured it out. I would still like Hondata to give me some feedback since the manual seems to only partially explain it.

The knock count is an internal algorithm determined by honda without flashpro control.

The knock map controls how much knock retard is applied to a knock detection. Historically, as knocks are detected at the same point it may learn where it needs to retard the timing automatically to where you do not detect knock but the knock retard is still indicated in the logs.

The knock counts may reset every time the car is turned off but the history of knock retard is stored. This would be for the fuel quality detection.

I haven't found any correlation between knock retard and knock counts at all. It just seems like it is hard coded to remove lots of timing below VTEC, and almost nothing above VTEC. Knock retard below VTEC goes upto about 5*, then above VTEC, there are just a couple little 1* blips here and there (at RPM points where I've never seen knock counts).

I edited what I just posted. I forgot to explain the part where you can have knock retard without a knock count based of the fuel quality control of the ecu.

Honda knock control only offer a long term adjustment of estimated fuel octane, and does not use dynamic ignition timing control.

That was a great writeup about how The knock control worked but not how the tables are used and where the retarded timing is calculated.

Could you go into more detail regarding the options within the flashpro manager?

The knock tables in FlashPro manager basically determine the amount of knock retard which is applied based on the amount of knock the ECU hears. Note that this may result in retard even if there is no knock.

For a more detailed explaination you would need to ask Honda how exactly the knock retard value is determined - it is fairly complex.
