how 'essential' is the vss?

Post by eg6-b18c6 »

hi all, i have recently got my k20a2 dc2 up and running and could do with a little help.

the ep3-r tranny i am using came with a spoon lsd fitted, i have noticed that i have no readout on my speedometer, i then noticed that i was not picking up any speed signal in my k-pro. when i investigated the problem i realised my vss does not have the toothed gear wheel on the end of it, and have also found that it is part of the LSD kit when bought new as the standard one wont work with the spoon LSD. i have tried to get hold of one off spoon europe but have had no luck at all.

in the meantime i have ticked the box to 'provide constant speed signal' and my car seems to run fine, im also not too bothered about getting my speedometer working at the moment as i'm a bit short on cash.....but what i am wondering is this.....

for what reason does the ecu need to know the speed? is it purely just for launch control, and to help show which gear you are in for datalogs? reverse lockout etc? (which im not that bothered about anyway) or does the ecu also use your calculated value of which gear you are in to maybe alter fuel, or ignition etc due to different 'load' due to being in different gears?

will it make any difference getting it tuned using the constant speed signal as opposed to getting my vss sorted first?

next thing, where do i get the spoon vss gear cog thing from? spoon europe are useless, they dont even seem to know what i am going on about and now seem to be ignoring my calls. also anybody have any idea how much its going to cost me?

thanks in advance, Ben

VSS is needed to calculate the gear the car is in for different ignition and fuel compensations based on gear. It is something you should fix.
