Cat vs. Test Pipe with JRSC

Post by ITR 1102 »

Is there a significant gain with a test pipe as opposed to a high flow cat on the JRSC with high boost? (Kamikaze header, SMSP stainless 2.5" stainless exhaust with Vibrant resonator).

If so, is a resonated test pipe better than a straight pipe?

My luck with cats is as bad as it gets. OEM, Carsound, Vibrant, all have failed on me.

I have had similar issues with catalytic converters. Had a muffler shop install an OEM replacement converter on my 2000 civic Si, also with the Kamikaze header (2.5") collector, and a full 2.5" stainless steel exhaust.

My maximum PSI reading on my boost gauge at Wide Open Throttle would show 13 PSI. After installing a test pipe, my maximum reading on the boost gauge is 11 PSI. Havent been back to the dyno yet, as it is 3 hours away.

Acceleration is smoother, top end power is noticeably stronger. Last time I was on the dyno was three weeks ago, and need to be retuned as the A/F ratios are run slightly lean during part throttle driving. Not all the time, just occasionally.

There is more noise from a test pipe, and you will notice a definite increase in exhaust fumes.

When I get back on the dyno, hopefully soon, I will let you know the horsepower differences. It may be influenced by lower Intake Air Temperatures, as my LHT intercooler pump was cracked and leaking during the last tuning session, and I had air in the heat exchanger and lines.
