Set ignition timing option
When using the set ignition timing option in SManager do you still have to jump the service connector like it shows in the service manual?
The short answer:
Forget about setting the timing to 14. Just match the distributor to SManager.
The long answer:
The object is to match the actual ignition timing with the timing in SManager. To do this you're going to change the distributor to match SManager.
The 'set timing' function exists in order to make matching the timing easy. Once you open the set timing window, SManager will set the ignition timing to whatever the number is in the window, without any compensations. Once you close the window, the ignition will go back to whatever is in the igition tables plus any compensations.
To set the timing, open the set timing window, set your dial back timing light to whatever number is in the set timing window, and rotate the distributor. If you don't have a dial back timing light, find out where the timing mark is on the crank pulley, and set the timing value in the timing window to this.
Once you have rotated the distibutor and closed the set timing window, then the engine is matched to SManager. You don't need to do anything further.
If you open the set timing window again, it will initially fix the timing at 16 degrees. This does not change the timing from SManager once you close the window. If you then change the timing to 14, you'd have to change the timing light to 14 as well, so it should be exactly the same as setting the timing light to 16 with SManager reading 16 too.
