Vtec Problem after k-pro installation and tunning
Hi there,
I own a Euro civic type-r and recently i made some modifications: Injen intake, PRC intake, Spoon throttle, J's racing full exhaust de cat manifold and Hondata K-pro. We made a fast tune to the ECU and eveything was working ok until the next day. I realise that when i first run the car in the morning (totally cold) the vtec doesn't work even when the car warms up (seems to be disable). The only way to make vtec enable is to turn off and on the ignition. If i don't do that vtec never works. We came through the parameters and sensors and everything looks ok. To you have any idea what might be???

I have exactly the same problem on my Civic:
- serial number of your K-Pro: ?
- the calibration (as an attachment): No
- a datalog of a problem (as an attachment): yes
- what sort of vehicle you have:
UK EP3 Civic Type-R
- what sort of ECU you are using: K-pro
- anything about the car which has been modified from stock which may affect the ECU (don't include what sort of rims you have nor stereo etc).
JRSC 650 inj 3.4 pulley, standard manifold and cat, ITG intake, DC catback
- a specific description of the problem
Sometimes Vtec does not engage when car started up from cold (once warmed up of course!). Oil pressure normal, oil temp normal (defi din gauges installed), oil level normal. Stop engine and start again vtec engages fine. I find this has happened since forcing the car into open loop. Car has a bad hesitation problem when in closed loop that is improved but not resolved by keeping in open loop. It seems to be worse when switching from closed to open loop.
I will try and datalog next time I have the laptop in the car and the problem occurs! Unfortunately my car is quite clever and the problem does not occur when it knows the laptop is sitting in the passenger seat logging all it's sensors. Strange but true!
In fact, I just remembered, I actually have a datalog with the vtec not working from ages ago (conveniently just under 5MB), please find it attached...
Please note that even though I did not rev high the vtec is set to engage at 3500 98kPa so should have engaged.
If anyone can explain the strangely high MAP values that would be super.

Where do I find these oils strainers?
I spoke to the service manager at our local Honda garage and he suggested using a Honda oil filter as I had a Fram one fitted when my oil pressure and temp sensors were fitted as it was the only one I could obtain at the time. I have done this but haven't tested enough to see if it helped.
I will try checking the strainers if you can tell me where they are.....
Oil filter changed to Honda one now...oil pressure is higher (600kPa when driving as opposed to around 550kPa) but had to top up after loosing oil during changeover so might just have more oil now.
I know where the VTC strainer is now....nice and accessible apart from the lower bolt being slightly blocked by the supercharger's tensioner housing. I'll take it off and have a wee peek....

Hondata, would you mind having a look at my latest datalog to see if the cam is lagging significantly from the camcmd. It is a long one - 45 minutes (zipped) but I would appreciate it if you could do this. I felt the car was running very well during this datalog.
Also, do you think the fact my car was mapped with the Fram oil filter fitted and now has a Honda oil filter fitted could cause issues? The Honda service manager reckoned it might affect the way it runs due to pressures being slightly different.

trlaing: my response was for the original poster, but it may be a good idea to check the VTEC & VTC strainers as well.
Graph CAM vs CAMCMD and you'll see that the cam angle lags the cam command. It is normal for the cam to go to 0 off throttle, but then it should advance at around 20 degrees per second to catch up with the cam command. On your datalog there are some spikes to full advance too.
