05+ K-series Transmission ?s

Post by PapiTuyo »

First off, Ive read the tech article you guys provided.
http://hondata.com/techk20transmissions.html
Very informative and appreciated.

I have an 03 Ep with a PRB Kpro unit. I currently have the original 5 speed EP3 transmission on my car. I have purchased a low milage 06 si transmission and would like to get it working

Now I get the two methods that dont involved a wiring nightmare.

1a. Swap the cases
or
1b. Tap the speed sensor hole

and
2. Add the speed sensor gear

My Questions are,

1. If I swap cases, do any of the pressed gears on the cases need to be swapped? Or it it as simple as just swapping cases? (Specifically in my case: EP3 case)

I ask this because Ive seen a local Honda mechanic swap Ep3 gearing into a base RSX and destroy the gears.

2. If I choose to tap the speed sensor hole location in the K20Z3 trans, is there a specified number of threads we should aim for, or just the whole way though?

The gear clusters do not need to be pressed off - the whole input and output shafts may be swapped. You will have to put a speed sensor drive gear on the differential (about $10 from Honda, or pull off the old sensor). You should check the clearence on the input shaft, and change shims if necessary (in the manual). You should also check the clearance on the differential (again, in the manual, but usually doesn't need adjusting).

I'm not sure what is involved in tapping the hole for the speed sensor. In this case you still would need to add the speed sensor drive to the differential.

Im sorry, I meant the pressed bearings on the case. My main concern is that there may be some minute differences in the case bearings that would lead to damage to my fresh gear set.

Ill probably end up taking it apart and comparing part nums when I get it regardless. Thanks for the response.

So after doing some research I found a company that makes converters for speedos.

Ive already gotten in contact with some people who have had success with the converter in kpro. My question is if anyone else has had any success getting these converters to work completely. Most ive talked to have been unable to get cruise control to work.

I realize swapping cases is easier, but this really limits the resale potential on the trans going out. Id rather keep everything seperate, even if I have to spend a little extra.
