K20A2 EP - crank but no start - cam angle issue?

Post by WeR138 »

Recently I swapped a K20A2 into my 2005 EP Si. Everything plugged up and seems to be fine with the engine. I have spark, fuel, and compression but the car only cranks and sometimes sputters. I know the sputtering is from fuel sitting in the cylinder from a mis-timed injection. The grounds on the car look good but I added more just in case. I've replaced the cam angle sensors on the back of the head, the CKF sensor by the pulley, even the VTC sensor through the timing cover. Nothing has worked.

I borrowed a friend's KPro to make sure it's not a KPro issue and noticed while cranking the Cam Angle sensor readings go from 0 to 107 degrees and back. This happens quickly - less than a second between switching back and forth.

Is this a sensor issue, a KPro issue, or a mechanical issue? Can someone please help?! Has anyone ever seen anything like this before?

How much compression did you get? Can you post the calibration and a datalog when you are cranking?

Trace every wire from the cam and crank sensors back to the ECU using the manual.

The calbration is for the stock K20a map. I forgot to mention that we changed out the cams, springs, and retainers for Type R valvetrain. Everything is fie mechanically speaking. Compression seemed a little low but was consistently 120 across all four cylinders. If one was off then I could see a mechanical problem. I relashed the valves from the top of the valve to the rocker instead of the rocker to the cam as dictated in the service manual using .010 and .009 gauges.

Tracing every wire might lead to a break shown, but it's the stock EP3 harness. Nothing was changed/added. Would a broken wire cause the weird sensor readings? How could it even "sense" 107 degrees of cam angle movement?

I'll see if I can get the calibration posted shortly. I am at work so thanks for bearing wth me!

Found the problem! The Kpro is reading the sensors fine. What I didn't know in reassembling the engine was one of the teeth on the cam sensor pick-up thing was broken off. That explains the jump in cam angle!

Thankfully a friend pointed it out when we were taking everything back apart today! A quick stop to the local K shop and the car is back together and running.
