Help, can't get my engine to idle!

Post by karmannghia »

Brief History:
Last year I ran the old Hondata p72 with the Rom Editor 2.5. Spent countless hours and $ on dyno to get my engine tuned perfect. This was a b18c1 with Drag 3 turbo, DSM 450, made 315 whp on 12 psi.

This year set up consists of B18c1 GE sleeved, bored out to 2.0L, custom turbo set up with Garrett 60-1 (Full Race manifold), 880 MSD injectors. After assembling the engine myself and installing it, I decided to break the engine in on a skunk2 P28. When the 1500 miles go by with no problem of idling, cranking, etc...., I decided to install the turbo and Hondata s200 on a p28. Well, I just converted my old basemap from last year using the new Rom Editor 3.5. After the engine warms up, I can't get it to idle. It would start and die instantly. I tried to run it open loop, increase the IAC duty cycle, but still didn't help. Don't try to say to check the voltage on the TPS (because it was running fine). Also for kicks, I swapped out the Hondata for my AEM which I bought previously but decided to go back to Hondata and it idles perfect.... :(

Do you have a wideband O2? You could be running lean. You went up from 550 to 880. You need to compensate for the bigger injectors' heavier pintles.

Yes, I have the wideband but it is not hook up. Plus it wouldn't idle long enough for me to read anything. On to your suggestion, wouldn't the injector mulitplier changes all of that? Because when I convert my old Rom from the p72 (2.5 Romeditor) to the p28 (3.5 Romeditor), I came back and make changes to what was needed.

Yes the injector multiplier does help but you need to fine tune it. Look for the Injector tech article by Hondata. That will explain why your idle is crap.

I am using 800cc RCs and it idles just fine.

You are right, I decided to leave the map alone to see and not mess with the injectors mulitplier(which was based on 450cc). It runs and idles just fine. When I mulitple it for 880, I noticed the multiplier goes down. But then it runs like crap.

What engine is this for? Can you send me the MAP for this? I just got my 800 RC injectors and this could really help me out.

Thanks.
