obd0-obd1 how do i find check engine light codes?

Post by posfwd4dr »

I have a 1990 EX civic with 1991 JDM B16, converted to obd1 with an s300. I am getting an intermittent check engine light, maybe once every other week. I can shut the car off and it goes away again. I do not have a computer to access the s300, so I was hoping to at least look for codes using the check engine light as in obd1 cars. The shop that did the install tells me there should be a connector to jump in the front drivers side corner of the engine bay, but my factory service manual shows nothing. I know on obd1 cars this should be under the dash. But since my car is converted, are my only options to buy a laptop or take it in? Thanks for any advice.

You should look at the instructions for your ecu adapter. Typically, there is a yellow wire that can be shorted to ground to make your check engine light flash the error codes.

Either beg/borrow/steal a laptop, lug your PC out to your garage, or find and ground the service connector switch line at the ECU (it is pin D4).

If you attempt to steal a laptop and get caught, Hondata will post your bail, just call and ask for the guy who told you to steal a laptop. :)

Thanks for the advice, but before I go sticking wires where they dont belong... there is a wire connected at pin D4, do I just stick a jumper wire in there along with it and ground the other end? Where does that wire go if there is no service connector to be found? And about the laptop, I have access to one, but if I install the Hondata program will I be able to re-install it on my own laptop if I ever get one?

THe s300 software (Smanager) can be downloaded and installed and used by anyone.

The service check connector on my 89 Civic is under the hood, just forward of the driver's side shock tower, and is a 2 pin connector with a yellow rubber cap sticking out of the wiring harness that goes forward to the headlights.

If your OBD conversion harness is properly designed, you will be able to jump that connector and have the codes flash on your check engine light on the dash, just like an OBD1 or OBD2 Civic.

Perhaps the '90-'91 cars do not have that service check connector, as I could not find it either under the hood or in my factory service manual, which is for 1991 civics. So is there any more info about jumping it at the ecu?

You just need to ground the SCS wire. Refer to the wiring diagrams for an OBD1 vihicle from the link below.
