Unable to start with P28 + S300 + CPR

Post by MB6Fr »

My MB6 has a JDM B18C engine equipped with a Hondata S300 V3 (SN 44110) installed on a P28 ECU, along with a Hondata Coil Pack Retrofit (CPR). The engine no longer starts. Here's what happened:

Initial issue:
I was experiencing ignition misfires, so I removed the distributor to check whether the problem was coming from there. I couldn't find anything unusual, so I reassembled it. However, immediately afterwards, the engine would no longer start.

Testing with another distributor:
I replaced the distributor with an original one from a B18C4 (removing the original ignition coil to accommodate the CPR), but the engine still wouldn't start.

Since I had been experiencing misfires, I also checked all the wiring connections in the harness. Everything seems fine.

CPR system troubleshooting:
I followed Hondata's troubleshooting procedure.

I reached Step 5, where the procedure instructs you to check for spark. There is definitely a spark. However, this doesn't guarantee that the ignition is occurring at the correct time or that the sparks are strong enough.

The spark plugs are wet, and the cylinders smell of fuel.

Checking with SManager:
I connected the Hondata S300 to my PC using SManager version 2.8.9.

- I performed a datalog.
- The only potentially useful information I found was that the voltage drops to 9.5V when cranking the engine, although I believe this is normal.

I then removed the CPR and unchecked the three CPR options in SManager to restore the original distributor configuration (with spark plug wires). The engine still wouldn't start, even though there is a spark.

Current situation:

The engine went from experiencing ignition misfires to being completely unable to start, immediately after the distributor was removed and reinstalled.

I've tested everything I can think of : two original distributors, Hondata's troubleshooting procedure, removing the CPR, checking all wiring connections, and confirming that both spark and fuel are present.

The one remaining plausible thing to test : my P28 ECU ?

If it will not start with a stock distributor you most likely have a mechanical timing issue. Since the distributors were disassembled, they may have been reassembled incorrectly.

Distributors are screwed by 3 screws and 2 pins take automatically place into the intake camshaft, you can't go wrong by putting them up. And i have tried two of these.

You may have put the key on the distributor that meshes with the cam on incorrectly.

You should try the ECU on a known working vehicle.

Unfortunately I do not know of any compatible owners.

About distributor's pin it's out of axis, you can't put it upside down.

It is designed not to allow you to, but it can still be done, and I have seen it happen many times, especially when the distributor has been disassembled.
