Hardcut Ignition (popping) Rev Limit

Post by ripsaw460 »

coming from tuning a saab with a 50 dollar adapter and free open source software i found it disappointing that the ecu calibrations are not as sophisticated as i was used to. on my saab i have a hard cut rev limiter set up, basically dumps fuel and cuts ignition timing at the set rpm and then fuel cuts to an rpm offset point, making for great popcorn.

i was wondering about something similar for my friends civic, the ecu has fueling and ignition meaning we could set a hard cut point in the calibration by putting two of the rows rpm points close together, I.E. 8570rpm and 8600 rpm, then we set the higher row to something like -8 degrees of ignition timing, then we go to fueling and do the same, but we add a lot more fuel (setting calibration to something like 9:1 afr) in order to cool egt and give the valves less of a beating, my friend already has some relatively aggressive pops so im not worried too much about decrease durability. (my saab with 250k miles ran fine with all the pops and bangs tricks including anti-lag at the expense of maybe some spark plugs)

so im basically inquiring on how this would work on this car and if anyone has done this before. my main concerns are the injectors not being large enough to cool egt at higher rpm, meaning we may need to reduce it, and also whether or not this is even possible without intervention from the honda ecu.

it would look something like this
