RSX-S ECU reflash missing rev limit - whoops?

Post by trickys »

This January, I purchased the RSX-S ECU reflash w/ the 5200 RPM VTEC engagement, 8100 RPM (stock) rev limit. So far so good, car is running better than ever... however, I got the chance to dyno the car for the first time today and discovered that the rev limiter in fact no longer engages. On the first run, we took the engine to nearly 9000 RPM (yikes). I had never taken the car over 8-grand since having the ECU reflashed anyway, so this was the first time I realized that the rev limiter wasn't working. I assume it has to do with the ECU reflash; is this a known issue? I'm still happy with the ECU reprogram as-is, I'll never wind my car out that high anyway (and it didn't seem to hurt anything today, thank goodness!). I just thought this might be an issue that Hondata might want to look into, so I wanted to let you know.

BTW with just the ECU reflash and an AEM SRI, my car was making 183 HP/136 ft-lbs torque at the wheel, very nice!

Rev counter accuracy

Post by Hondata »

The Honda rev counter is not accurate. The ECU rev limiter is at 8600 rpm, which will be at 9000-9200 rpm on your stock tach. I have seen tachs as much as 1000 rpm inaccurate at 8000 rpm.

Interesting, thanks for the info. Still, I would have thought that with the 8100rpm rev limit reflash which I got, that the rev limiter would have kicked in sometime. The dynojet shows that my car was still pulling at around 8700rpm (this is while the car's tach needle was buried). Or am I misunderstanding how this is supposed to work after the ECU reflash?
